Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I just discovered this via Cracked.

"In 2015, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige went on record and confirmed that most of the movies in Marvel's Phase Two line-up (Iron Man 3 to Ant-Man) reference The Empire Strikes Back via moments in which various characters get their hands cut off."

The Protomen enhanced my life.

Yep. Not sure if Phase 3 has a similar running gag of its own. Their idea is to make them more distinct in response to accusations of sameyness so maybe not.

[up][up] Yep. Ao S even joined in on the fun. But then, the show is packed with Star Wars references. Apparently Coulson is a big fan.

And I think in the movies it is actually every movie..well, kind off. Let's see if I remember correctly.....one of the extremis guy gets his hand hacked off in Ironman 3, I think, but I admit, I can't quite remember the scene in question....in Thor TDW they pretend to hack off Thor's hand, in The Winter Soldier they show Bucky when he has lost his arm, In Got G Nebula hacks off her cybernetic hand to escape, in Age of Ultron Claws hand/arm gets ripped off by Ultron and in Antman Yellowjacket's left arm crumbles before he vanishes completely. Even Civil War had Bucky losing his arm...Doctor Strange was the first movie which stopped the tradition...I think.

@Swan:I put him for his comment of giving peter mon the tumor, the way he said look like it was a every day thing "look, she want me to stay and I put a tumor in his head, shit happen" it was....wow, if anything the whole deal happen after come weak as result of that moment.

Also, the moment when Peter step down using the same powers and chain start sounding in the background...lovely.

Also a random note: you know a hydra goon in Winter soldier was KG Beast in BVS? I feel weird, I want him as evil guy in fox to complete the circle.

[up] Yeah, but I frankly don't care, actors turn up in different projects all the time, and while it is sometimes funny, the truth is that by the time the MCU is over most of the actors in Hollywood will have had a role in it at one point. Or at least a funny cameo.

Yep, the whole Tumor thing really turned on the switch, though him "killing" the Walkman had already enraged me at this point.

[up]I didnt saw that point so far didnt have any issue until he mention the tumor, finally Marvel did the imposible and manage to conect me with the hero in blasting the damn villian, it was also really belivable he will slip in telling peter that since his god status make such things comon.

but also, what a did, really.

[up] You might want to watch Lindsey Ellis analysis of the movie....for context, she is usually not that much into the MCU movie, but this one really touched her on a deep personal level. And the review is excellent.

[up]I will, just to said: while I like the father son mofit in the movie, I feel it make all other plotline kind of there: Rocket jerk behivor being a shield just come as another "jerk with heart of gold" that marvel keep pushing, and Nebula and gamora was just....whatever, especially with so little screen time.

[up] The different storylines are thematically connected...just watch the vid, it is hard to explain in a short post.

Speaking of vid, a new "I'm Marvel...I'm DC" one. It's hilarious.

Re: the hand-losing tradition: Doctor Strange doesn't have anybody lose a hand during the movie, but that one sorceror dude lost his hand prior to the events of the film at some point. Guardians 2 has Nebula trade her crude hand in for a newer model, but that's a bit of a stretch. Spider-Man is the first without any arm-loss whatsoever, and I don't recall it happening in Ragnarok either.

The Netflix shows played with it too. Daredevil's first season has Stick slice off a guy's arm in his intro, while its second season had Punisher saw off a Kitchen Irish's hand to steal his briefcase. Jessica Jones saw Kilgrave's father get both his arms removed. Luke Cage and Iron Fist didn't have anyone lose a whole arm or hand, but they both have someone lose a finger at least. And Defenders, of course, has both Stick and Misty's ordeals.

Don't remember if Punisher's own show continued the tradition.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

Stephen Strange's hands do get crushed half to hell as a major impetus of the main plot. They probably counted that.

I will laugh if that running gag gets paid off when Thanos gets his hand that has the gauntlet on it cut off.

Does Tyr ever show up in any of the Thor movies? He's famously one-handed, courtesy of Fenrir.

So, apparently Disney and Fox have reached an agreement....they will officially announce it tomorrow, but some reputable newspapers are already breaking the news, so I guess the first step is taken.

According to the Frankfurter Allgemeine (German newspaper) the deal includes not just all the entertainment units of Fox, but also Hulu (turning Disney into the major shareholder of it with 60%), National Geographic, their shares in Star in India and Sky UK. No clarification if that includes Sky in other countries, but I guess yes because the article says that Murdoch keeps only Fox news, the sports channels and the local channels. They also say that Disney plans to start its own streaming service ESPN Plus, then add another service for younger people while using Hulu for the slighter audience.

Oh, and they are still talking about 60 Billion. Which is just....wow. Paid in shares apparently......

Found the article that Swanpride was talking about. (It's in German, so you'll need Google Translate or a fluency in German to read it.)

What else can I say but...

True, even though it's finally happening, I'll freely accept that we won't be seeing mutants in the MCU right away already. At best, we'll see something come from this like late 2018 or early 2019.

Right now, we still have Deadpool 2, New Mutants, and Dark Phoenix next year.

But after that? Who knows...? wink

Honestly, at this stage I am more interested about the immediate decisions - What happens to Blue Sky (my money is on Disney selling it if possible), what will they do with the Sky (which might be the worst asset in the whole thing), will they blend National Geographic with Disney Nature, what the hell is Star India (yeah, never heard of this one), and if they start a streaming service will it be local or will they go in other markets, too?

Also, the deal has to get approved, too. While I don't think that this is breaking any anti-trust laws regarding the movie divisions, I am not quite sure about the TV assets.

Well, if they're making an announcement tomorrow, I assume they've already crossed that bridge or at the very least, are halfway from crossing said bridge.
