So, I did some research:
A Reboot is being planned and Arnold has signed on. They want to make a reboot trilogy.
This plan is affected by changes to US copyright law, which means JAMES CAMERON GETS THE FRANCHISE BACK IN 2018 FUCK YEAH.

I thought the 3rd movie felt like bad fan fiction.

I felt like the third movie, the robot that was sent back was a downgrade from the T-1000.

[up]Yep. It was shilled as being extremely dangerous to Arnie's T-850 or whatever model number he had in that movie but what do you expect from a design that had what amounts to at least two low-yield fusion bombs inside the combat chassis? The T-1000 would have wiped the floor with that T-X thing.

The only upgrade was that they managed to give it weapons this time.

[Snickerswaii] 'Genisys'? was the regular spelling too standard a buzzword for the marketing team?

[up]Seems to be the most common reaction on the net to the title, that one.

I wish the film well, but I am not going to see it. Two horrible (in comparison) sequels after two really good movies were enough for me.

^^ The traditional spelling is too generic to be trademarked by anyone, if it's also used in-universe (say, as a corporation name).

Isn't Genisys already trademarked? By like a bank or something? Is this a Terminator movie where a credit union's computers try to take on Sky Net or something?

Of course, don't you know anything about ALCHEMY?!- Twin clones of Ivan the Great

Searching on "Genisys -terminator" (the later to filter out hits on the T movie) brings up a bunch of companies using the name, including a credit union (close enough to bank), what appears to be a web app for Regent University, an "IT solutions" company (hmm... nah), and a bunch of other organizations.

Anyway, being fiction, if it is used in-universe (remembering that other than its use in the title we don't know the relevance of the word, funky spelling or otherwise) it doesn't necessarily need to care much about real world trademark collisions unless one of the RL companies decides to make a legal stink about it.

[up] Which of course they will do, to protect their brand. Their lawyers would quite rightly say that they would be stupid not to. Expect out of court settlements inbound.

^ Not necessarily.

While trademarks are "defend or lose", given the wide range of RL applications the whole issue of being mistaken for something else comes into play, which is a far more murky legal situation... which is well beyond the scope of this thread, even before getting into the whole issue of Pyrrhic Victories in going against a megacorp like a movie company (remembering that "loser pays" isn't universal). tongue

Anyway, as there's no info (or none that I'm aware of, anyway) beyond the name in the title logo, it's all speculation on our part, and personally I'm not going to spend too much time worrying about it.

My mouth has been wide open all the way through that thing.

Fuck. ING. HELL!!!! I want to see this movie NOW, SOLDIER!!!

This is the Terminator sequel I have secretly been wanting for years. Hopefully the last one. And the Terminator 2 theme is back!!! Yee HAWW!!!

The classic H Ks, Liquid Metal Terminators, an ass kicking Sarah Connor. And ARNIE for reals instead of a fake-ass CGI job.

Lol, New Sarah is so tiny! How is anyone supposed to be intimidated by that? Look at her, she's adorable!

This actually looks pretty good. But I've learned to not get my hopes up recently.

The last hurrah? Nah, I'd do it again.

Remember Linda Hamilton in the first film? She was a skelf, as they say over here. In the second movie, she was arguably the most dangerous one of the lot, a proper Mama Bear.

Maybe this new Sarah Connor will be as good as her?

Terminator 2 fucked up the whole time travel sequence. At the end of the first one, it was clearly stated the past can't be changed. Then T2 changed it, while makes Reese being sent by Connor to conceive Connor to make little sense. T3 tried to fix this, but then also had a terminator successfully killing future officers, which is blatantly changing the future (probably hoped we wouldn't notice since they were nobody to us).

Sarah Connor Chronicles was just absolute shit by having an entire mini war before the war and there's just all these robots and rebels just chilling in the present day thanks to time travel. Fucking stupid. Only benefit was I almost got to see Summer Glau and John Connor's mom naked a couple times.

So to answer your question; no. The Terminator series is a zombie that should've died a long time ago and only lasted this long due to 80s nostalgia.

So I saw this trailer. It feels like they just threw T1 and 2 in a blender. It looks good, but its nothing we haven't seen before. This is probbaly the best damn evidence we have that Hollywood isn't coming up or won't invest in new ideas. Their new Terminator movie is just a remake of the first two.

It seems this one is going to validate an aspect of Salvation; which is the time line is getting successively more changed by both parties.

As far as I'm concerned Time Travel in the Terminator Movies still makes sense to me. Each time line has a successive time line, time travelling into the past takes you into that new time line. (I have a theory that Skynet is a quantum computer and is infact aware of all timeline simultaneously, or possibly, just like the resistance hasn't got a full understanding of Time Travel)

There's an originating time line in which John Connor never got born because Kyle Reese hadn't been born yet to conceive him, but some how Kyle managed to get sent back in time none the less. (Skynet testing time travel on human subjects?)

Then successive time lines each had a Kyle Reese sent back in time to farther a John Conner who would live to send the next Kyle Reese Back.

Then we get to what I'll call Time Line A. This is the time line depicted in flash forwards in Terminator 1 & 2. Skynet in this one in an attempt to destroy the resistance sends three terminators into Time Line B to assassinate Sarah Conner, John Conner, his generals and import information into Skynet ahead of time. Getting wind of this; the resistance sends back Kyle Reese, a T-800 and a T-850 to protect the Connors.

Time Line B is the one depicted in the bulk of Terminator 1, 2, 3, Salvation and presumably the start of Genasys. In this time line the Connors live and age fighting off terminators and coming to believe that time travel is circular, something which is disproven during the events of Salvation, when it is discovered Skynet has received information from the future and history isn't rigidly unfolding. Later the resistance and Skynet gain access to time travel. Skynet sends terminators into the past of Time Line C, the resistance send back Kyle Reese to protect an adult Sarah Connor, and even later in that same timeline time travel is perfected to the point that they can send a T-8## as far back as Sarah's childhood to raise her.

During the events of Terminator Genesys Kyle Reese arrives in Time Line C to discover that aged T-8## is there already to prempt Skynet's movements, and a T-1000 is likewise there to do the same in return.

Why does Skynet put so much effort into saving it self in alternative timelines? Like I said, my theory is that Skynet is a quantum computer, and experiences all the established timelines simultaneously; creating new timelines and ensuring that iteration of Skynet is more powerful than the last ensures Skynet's computing power gets bigger and bigger.

Emilia Clarke's line deliveries were atrocious. She's going to have a hard time coming across as a badass. Absolute cringeworthy.

Why couldn't they have cast Lena Heady? She's already played the role, and she's even on the same show.

I'm not impressed. Between Clarke and Jai Courtney (and absolute charisma sink of an actor who must have made good use of a casting couch or incriminating photographs for all his roles), this movie has a lot going against it. (Even ignoring the stupid name.)

So the war between man and machine has basically devolved into a Time War. Which begs the question of how can either side definitively win if they can keep sending folks back and how long can they keep this up before they destroy the space-time continumn through shear time travel muckery?

There's a part of me that wonders if, continuing along this route, Skynet's defeat is inevitable simply by the fact that it can only send its robots so far back before it threatens to destroy itself by accidentally killing off the people needed to make it exist in the first place.

Humans, on the other hand, basically just need Skynet to not exist anymore and they win by default.
