Does anyone else want to replace Grumpy Tropers?

I am in a small house with two parents and three siblings. I tried to do an LP once. I got funny looks and was eventually told to stop. Even if they were fine with it, I'd be constantly interrupted by a family member asking me to do something or what I was doing.

That's too bad. I'm lucky to have a single here at college, I can do all the commentatin' I like.

As for how you do it, yeah, Skype, Audacity/Garageband, WMM/iMovie. I'll be freeish over Thanksgiving for any retsupuraes. My Skype is williamlongfellow.

Practice talking to yourself and narrating your actions while playing a game, even if you don't record. But you can record yourself, without recording footage, just to see how you do.

I can't really listen to my voice, I hate the way it sounds like.

I would also like advice for when I start. What programs should I use? I've heard FRAPS works, and is used by a lot of the professionals for when they play PC games. Also, would I need a mic to record if I have a Mac with a built-in webcam/voice recorder? Or would that bring in too much background noise?

Dunno what Shlap and co. used, and I'm not sure about the built-in equipment.

I think for Grumpy, they just used download software to rip the vids from Youtube, and played them whilist Skyping. For recording your own footage off PC, Camstudio + Audacity's not too bad, but you have to play around with the quality, and it's picky about file sizes. And for editing, I highly recommend the open-source Virtual Dub. Seriously, it makes fixing audio desync SO EASY.

Well, I'm not sure about downloads, since they sometimes mentioned the Likes/Dislikes and comments.

For most RPs you can just watch the video together (do what Beef and Betus do—count down to zero, then hit the play button together). Then rip it. There are a bunch of websites like KeepVid that let you download You Tube videos.

If you want to show You Tube comments and such, you'll need to do some screen capture and screen sharing on Skype.

As far as I'm concerned you can record Youtube videos with Fraps.

Besides, they might have recorded the audio track separately, no?

Yeah, actually, Shlap and co. might have done that, ripping/downloading the videos and editing the original video's, uh, video into the RP.

I SHOULD try, even though I don't have the world's most telegenic voice. Maybe I could be a funny-voice guy, like Psychedelic Eyeball...

Not sure about being a funny voice, but I haven't really heard anything to compare against (excluding Longfellow's voice), but you could still give it a shot.

As much as I'd like to LP/ rip on LP's; I'm neither funny enough, or angry enough to do so.

So We should plan a setup: Get a youtube account. schedule days to get together on skype, make a list of videos to watch Etc.

Yeah, stuff like that. Probably still need to figure out recording and rendering, though.

ok I understand. as for recording you could always get hypercam. You may have to register it but its free to use.

Hypercam or Fraps would work fine.
