And speaking about dumb premises, I don't know why I just got an idea to write Shinobi Rhapsody, which is basically Bohemian Rhapsody turned into a fic.

Basically, an unnamed shinobi commits a murder ("Mama... just killed a man... put my hand upon his head, used my jutsu now he's dead...") and confesses to a parental figure or maybe even an actual parent about it, is arrested and admits that nothing really matters, 'cuz of that rampant sociopathy bit. The unnamed shinobi's only regret is being caught.

The twist is that there is no twist.

Why, yes, that would be the intention.

It's admittedly a little harder, since Beelzeboss is just ridiculously easy to adapt that way.

Maybe. I really should finish that one I was supposed to make with Fate singing You Don't Love Me Anymore, I really have to do that one with Kakashi and You're Gonna Go Far Kid. I already did I Run NY with Dumbledore, Mc Gonagall and Flitwick. I'm kinda tempted to do Unforgiven I, II and III with Sasuke, as well. Also need to get far along enough in Konoha no San Yuri to have Kaguya sing the first verse of Only a Chilling Elegy. Maybe I can also do Hope for the World, or at least the first few lines, just need to find the right circumstances. Maybe I can do Sympathy for the Devil with Orochimaru. Also tempted to write Indestructible for a few people actually. Also, Run for Sasuke. And I've also thought of doing Strength of the World for a fic in which the roles between Sasuke and Naruto are inverted, so Naruto grows up an angry loner and Sasuke refuses to wind up like Itachi. And of course, Back in Black has to get one, as well, though I also can't quite figure out who would be the best fit.

...

If you can correctly identify all of the bands who made those songs, I will let you make a request for which one I should attempt to write first.

Ummm...

...so I've been lurking here forever? For some reason I've read all 400 pages without ever actually saying anything. And then I decided to write some fanfiction. And then I made an account.

What do you guys think of fiction containing abuse? Or Adult Fears in general? This one is set in the Warring States Period and I honestly can't think of any other logical way to portray that era. Also, it's not a Nail fic, per se. Mostly I'm building it around what little canon we have, and it's kind of important to the plot that certain elements go as usual (Hashirama and Madara meeting, for instance, and later becoming clan heads). But there are many, many little things that add up to subtly change the characters themselves, so as the climax builds they end up taking different paths.

It starts when they are children:

>Hashirama hides serious control problems and a fear of his Wood Release behind his goofy attitude (Yes, that's a pet peeve of mine. No-one ever seems to have trouble with their gifted-from-the-author kekkei genkai in most fanfics. I imagine that, like everyone else, he would struggle to figure it out at first, and in his case it'd be particularly horrific what with wood bursting out of him at random intervals).

>Tobirama, unfortunately, has Rape as Drama, Rape as Backstory, Rape as Nail, Rape as Everything Ever. From a writing perspective it's...not as bad as it sounds, honestly. It's one of the events that kick off the plot: he and Kawarama (who's still alive) get captured by an enemy clan, and when they outlive their limited usefulness (no information of any real worth, no ransom) he lets himself be used to keep his little brother alive. Sadly, he's ten. Unfortunately, he's a shinobi in an era where everything is fair game.

>Madara is...well, Madara. Has lost four siblings by the time the story starts, is pathologically attached to the only remaining one, and has the misfortune of being considerably more powerful than his peers. Also, the curse of hatred. My headcanon is that he got the sharingan much earlier than at the riverbank, what with the scene where he almost tells Hashirama that he has it. But he hides it from his clan because revealing it will force him into even more attention.

>Mito has the Yin Seal. It's not the handy heal-everything-and-super-strength powerup we see in Tsunade and Sakura - that's something Mito invented. In reality, the Yin seal was placed on Uzumaki who had little aptitude for field combat: they spent their lives storing chakra in the seal, and in times of need were used in kamikaze tactics. Activating a special technique converts all that chakra to an explosion of energy all at once, killing the user as well. The method proved so effective that at the time of her childhood there is an entire trained corps of its users. She was recently selected to join them, and lives her young life in terror of receiving The Order.

That's the status of things by the first chapter. They sort of grow together from there. There are a lot of things that are "different", but mostly because they're ambiguous in canon. Like their respective fathers not being clan heads, because seriously, who lets the heirs of mortal enemy clans wander around in the forest and meet each other during an ongoing war? Also their interactions with their parents: Madara's father, ironically, is about the most stable of the bunch. And the things that change, that make them different people, prompts a certain black blobby dude to step up his plans and target Ashura's reincarnation instead. Reality ensues. But there's a bittersweet ending.

I put up a prologue a couple of weeks ago and realized I had to rewrite half of what I have, so I decided to drop in here for advice. I'm not completely sure about posting a link, because it's pretty twisted and vaguely explicit right off the bat (the opening scene is with Tobirama in captivity) and I'm not entirely sure how well that would sit with most of you.

You should beware of Darkness Induced Apathy. Or however that trope goes. If things are too bleak, the audience may just stop caring.

Furthermore, while there are on ideas that can't be done well, Rape is one of those that is extremely difficult to do well. The only advice I can give you is to consider the world you're building. In a world where that's the logical result of being captured, why wouldn't they be raised in such a way that it's not that big a deal to them?

Anyway... Hashirama doesn't really work as a character without massive Plot Armor. He is simply Too Dumb to Live. If you're gonna change it so his goofy attitude is a mask to hide his insecurities, you might be able to fix that by having him be just smart enough to get away with pretending to be dumber than a bag of rocks.

With Tobirama... It seems you're using him to display the 'cruelty' of the world you've created. From your brief description, it doesn't seem there's any other real purpose to keeping him around as a character. Also you'll be accused of being a hater.

As for Mito... We don't know much about her. Everything that was once attributed to her went on to be attributed to Hashirama, so it's likely she was simply his trophy wife, yet another useless female to add to the counter for this series. You can get away with pretty much anything in order to make her a more interesting character.

I don't care about Madara unless Madara's being Madara, because he was the only entertaining thing in the War Arc.

@IANCE

Oh, I'm well aware of that, which is why I'm trying to build a plot that works alongside the darkness. The darkness is supposed to be a background feature, if that makes sense. Like in a dystopic novel - things are shitty, and messed up, and maybe there's a zombie apocalypse, or aliens have taken over the planet, or Big Brother is watching you, but the story isn't about those things in particular. It frames the plot, yes, but ultimately it's about the characters and their lives.

When I said it's fair game I didn't mean it's a logical result for children. And even things that are logical results in canon clearly affected them (see Hashirama's lashing out when Kawarama died, and Butsuma's obvious grief suppression), mostly because much as they'd like to believe otherwise they're still human. In this particular case not everyone in their universe is a closet pedophile, and being a violent sadistic bastard in every other way doesn't mean you won't get squicked at the thought of sex with a child. But they're trained as tools, and their bodies are extensions of that: in this case the clan in general sees it as something he did for the (more or less) mission. And he rationalizes it to himself this way, even during the act. But he's still human, and all of ten years old, and he suffers the trauma of it. And since there are no therapists ever, he simply tries to suppress it all to almost devastating results. He gets better though :/

The thing about Hashirama is that unlike Naruto, he's actually quite intelligent if you think about it. I mean, he doesn't just spam the same two learned jutsus over and over; for someone who's apparently the first in the world to have the Wood Release, he managed to build an entire fighting style around it with an insane amount of rather complex techniques. And he's no slouch in regular melee fighting either. Plus that broken genjutsu he used on Sarutobi when Orochimaru revived him way back in Part 1, and the gate seals he used on the Juubi. To cut a long story short, to me it seems less like he's an actual idiot and more like he's a victim of the plot. Sure, he wants to believe the best of everyone, but he manned up when it was necessary - I don't think Naruto would ever have killed Sasuke, even if the latter was busy ripping out all his organs and burning Konoha to the ground. And it's more than a little odd the way he can act like a total doormat one moment, subdue an angry Tobirama with a glance the next, then promptly start laughing loudly. I don't think Obfuscating Stupidity is too much of a stretch for him (I have this headcanon where he's actually a rational individual but it's Ashura's chakra in him that randomly takes over).

A hater? But Tobirama-dono-sama-san-kun-senpai-chan is my favorite character ;-; I'm aware he seems like a showcase, but really all of them are victims in some way. His is simply the most visceral case, and is actually the easiest for me to write convincingly, because his troubles are not something that can be solved by simply getting stronger/smarter. The trauma he deals with is as "clean" as possible; it's focused more on his reactions than the act, and I am trying really hard to keep the overall tone sympathetic even though the setting demands quite a few unpleasant tropes (rape double standards, for instance, and adults not knowing how to deal with a traumatized child). I suppose no amount of explaining can convey the point though, so here's the prologue if you don't mind reading about child abuse: www.fanfiction. net/s/11158138

The story revolves around him, really - it's interactions with him, largely because of The Event, that shift the others' trajectories. Mito, for instance, is sent to the Senju to help undo the seal his captors placed on his chakra, and they build this tentative intellectual friendship; it's their correspondence that gives her the inspiration for the healing-and-strength Yin seal. The clan head (who is unfortunately an OC) notices his genius and preys on his buried issues to keep him insanely loyal to him only - he is wary of Butsuma and his son with the weird power, and holds Tobirama as a sort of spy/hostage/student minion, prompting him to develop some of his darker jutsu. Hashirama would be nowhere without his constant struggle to keep him alive, and eventually he's instrumental to making him clan head. And his issues and disillusionment with his clan help him understand Madara a bit more, which leads to him working harder to gain and keep a respectable if hated asset, which leads to Izuna not dying and a bunch of other stuff, which leads to an alliance based on more than dreams, which leads to an awkward frienship turned more. Though it all turns out to be Nice Job Fixing It when Izuna of all people takes his brother's eyes and attempts to carry out the Moon's Eye Plan...

Ah, yes, Mito. Me: Jinchuuriki of the Kyuubi! Fought it alongside her husband and sealed it! Negative emotions sensing! Has a Yin seal! Is a traditional Uzumaki with sealing tags in her hair! Kishi: Lolwut, I'm gonna revive her husband and *he's not even going to remember her*.

Burning a Cliché

"Naruto, Orange is the worst color for a ninja!" Sakura claimed.

"That's bull! Orange is the best," Naruto replied, crossing his arms and huffing. "And why the hell do you want to change how I dress? It's stylysh, practical and awesome in every way!"

"No, no it isn't! I'm dressing practi-"

"No, you're not. Sakura, you have no pockets, your dress is restricting your movement and it's not even made from a resistant material. If anyone should change, it'd be you," Naruto cut off, looking somewhat petulant.

"Well at least I'm not wearing goddamn orange," she sniped back. "Seriously, why are you even wearing orange?"

"Ask yourself this question, Sakura: Who expects a loud kid wearing orange to be a ninja?"

"... Holy crap. I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but... you got a point."

Naruto grinned.

I now wonder what it would be like if the Elemental Nations were ever forced to have interaction with a more modern world despite being hidden for so long (somewhat like Paradise Island in DC).

Sure there be many plot points needing to iron out, but just think about it, the rest of the world has modern weapons and technologies while the Elemental Nations have super soldiers.

Hell, just think the uproar the general populous would have at hearing all these countries condone and some level promote child soldiers.

[up]It would be tricky. The techniques that the Naruto system considers "mundane" are in no way mundane compared to the modern world. Low-level ninja techniques include transformation and various methods of cloning. Then there's all the stuff that the average genjutsu technique can do. In the Naruto 'verse, where such stuff is normal, those are annoyances at best, but in a modern world? Total game changer. And that's not even taking all the high-level into account...

It isn't so much the technological diffrences - it's the political and diplomatic ones.

The Naruto-verse is *incredibly* backwards in political organization. Hence all the violence.

Which means they are likely to get subverted at the political, social and economic level even without any explicit policy trying to do that. Just selling seeds, plows and tractors to them would catalyze a major social upheaval. But they are also conspiracy nuts of the highest order (because they constantly conspire!) so they'll see it as planned attack, try to retaliate, and oops, mushroom clouds.

The oops mushroom clouds would work a lot better, if there weren't like a dozen Naruto characters that could retaliate with equivalents. I feel like for a modern world mashup with Naruto characters, you'd probably have to nerf the Naruto characters. It doesn't matter if you can fuck them over politically if one of them decides to just start blowing all your shit up. Repeatedly. And since they're a single person who can transform and disguise themselves, they're going to be a lot harder to track down and stop.

The other alternative is to maybe make it Naruto vs Earth in like 2050-2100 or something. Enough technological progress that sure Narutoverse would still have more raw power probably, but we'd be able to better adapt to their methods with a significantly better tech base. At least IMO.

No, that's the point. The ninja villages *would get their shit fucked up* politically. Just exposure to modern ideas will do that. Then someone at Naruto's level gets sent to "retaliate". And then everything turns to fire. Basically, what I am saying is "This is not going to end well".
