Probably a combination of it being more common and people assuming that just because Bob used the same line of dialogue as Alice in a different show, that the former must be a shout out.

Also people may be less likely to recognise references in older works, the work being referenced having become obscure as time goes on.

I think it is along the lines of what Wulf said.
Fan Myopia leads certain people to assume connections and shout outs due to similarities rather than actual references.

Is it just me or are there more Reference Overdosed works nowadays than ever? Look at Shout-Out and some of the subpages have HUGE list of references. Are references to other works becoming more common place nowadays? Just wondering.
