The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That people think the economy is doing well also doesn't mean they attribute it to Trump. I mean, most Republicans probably due, but Democrats and maybe Independents? That seems unlikely.

[up]Exactly, it's just nonsensical to look at that poll and think that it means Trump has some kind of advantage.

The economy doing well means jack all to those coal miners and factory workers who are still losing their jobs despite Trump's promises. That'll also be a factor.

In a way the good economic conditions is simply another damning factor for Trump, if he's doing this badly approval wise when the economy is doing well how badly would he do if it takes a turn for the worse?

The sad thing is, the economy will almost certainly go bad once Trump gets more of his shitty agenda done. The tax bill alone will likely cause problems down the line, as trickle-down is wont to do.

I hope you guys end up being right, but then I think how refined the GOP spin machine is.

[up]If the GOP spin machine were as magically as you're implicitly suggesting then they would've fixed Trump's godawful approval ratings and their poor chances in 2018, but they aren't and haven't.

[up] I'm seeing that on Yahoo too, coming from Schumer himself. I hope that means that Dreamers are going to be saved...

... Even if we have to give even 1 cent to a stupid Wall. Hopefully, come 2019, Democrats will just end funding to the Wall.

I wonder if they’re betting on Trump being unwilling to veto, not becuse he’s smart enough to realise that it woudl be dumb, but because Trump has enough of an ego that he might be unable to have an elaborate signing ceremony where he declares that the government is open again.

Apparently some progressive Senators (including Harris, according to CNN) aren't too happy, so I'm guessing that DACA got the kicked can treatment. I doubt it includes Wall funding though. This is probably another short-term Resolution that keeps the government while they try to hammer out an actual deal.

That said, it does apparently include a commitment to begin talking about an immigration deal without Trump's prior approval.

Double post for an update: the Senate has voted to refund the government. I believe it just keeps the government running for 3 weeks, with no legal effect on DACA or the border.

Final vote was 81-18, with Mc Cain being absent I believe.

Now it goes to the House.

Well, it should keep the government open, which means that federal public servants don't go days/weeks without pay, the economy doesn't get too jittery, and people who rely on government services can actually get them. It really just gives Congress more time to try and hash out a budget that's at least tolerable to all sides.

So Trump doesn't get his wall, but Democrats gain a guarantee of at least a vote on Feb. 8th, even if it's a failure.

Yeah, it's not a whole lot, but I would consider this a success for the Dems, especially if Trump vetoes it.

What's worrying (and maybe means Mcconnel is something of an evil genius) is that it's making it so that it's really obvious that Democrats are willing to have a shut down to save DACA. Which is morally good, but makes it really easy for the GOP to fan anti-immigrant sentiment by making it so that the spin is that Democrats prefer helping illegal immigrants to protecting CHIP.

That said, Pelosi says she'll vote no on the House bill if Ryan and Co don't commit to reopening DACA talks.

[up][up]I think this could be considered a draw, or at least a stopgap to buy time for another round, by all sides. If Trump is stupid enough to veto a clean CR....the Democrats get a really good PR present.

Chris Coons (D-Delware) confirmed that most of the Democrats voted on this because Mitch promised movement on immigration talks.

So, this fight is going to keep going. Either Mitch goes back on his word, or he gets into a pissing patch with the hardliners in his own party/Trump.

[up]A chain of shutdowns is not without precedent. There were three in 77, two in 82, and two more in 84. They happened all the time, usually for a short period, in the 70s and 80s.
