Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

He isn't and it'd not be his job anyway.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIf FEMA's budget is cut while Trump is in office after two disastrous hurricanes, even he may not be able to recover from such a monumental fuck-up.
So, Rush Limbaugh bashed hurricane reporting as liberal media bias. Then he evacuated.
There used to be a concept of shame in America. Where'd it go?
It's Rush Limbaugh. He hasn't felt shame for decades.

Disgusted, but not surprisedYou might wanna not give the Daily Heil any of our clicks.
That was on purpose.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanSort of like linking to fox news praising Democrats in the wake of their deal with Trump? A "If they're not whitewashing this..." deal?

Well, my roommate told me this morning that some of his more conservative family members in Florida believed what Limbaugh was saying and refused to evacuate. The rest of his family are now unable to contact, and so cannot figure out what has happened to them.
Limbaugh and the rest of the right wing propaganda machine can go shove a rusty coat hanger up their collective ass.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."I, for one, fully support holding Limbaugh legally accountable for any deaths caused by his hurricane-conspiracy nonsense.
No, sgamer, "deliberate" means to use a hate rag to comment on a hate-worthy action. (Also, it was the first item on the Google search result)
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat's kind of what I meant, but not quite in the same way.
I was thinking more of "if these people are calling out conservative nonsense that's how bad it is".

Trump did want $1 billion cut from FEMA to pay for his stupid border wall, but he flip-flopped on that after Harvey hit. Last I heard, he was saying it's fine to pass a budget without wall funding, but he wants money for his wall during budget talks in December.
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Apparently the US Assistant Secretary of State and the Russian Vice Foreign Minister are meeting in Helsinki on Monday. The fact that this is news does show that relations haven't gotten any better.
Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleMan, he is not letting go of that wall, is he? You'd think it would've gone through that thick echo chamber of a skull of his that that wall just isn't going to get built, not when he'll need the support of a good number of Democrats to pass it.
Hitokiri in the streets, daishouri in the sheets.I think he's too used to just saying things until other, smarter, far more diligent people make them happen.
Plus, it seems like he actually cares about the wall getting built, it's not just something he talks about to get attention or votes or whatever.
I'll admit, the thought has been worrying me - you don't think that the Democrats would agree to fund the wall in exchange for some other sort of deal, do you?
To be clear, I'm far from convinced that they would actually do this - and even if they were willing, I can't imagine that the Democrat base would be okay with something like that - but I do worry that there may be/may have already been a compromise on a vital issue in exchange for gains elsewhere.
I suppose that while I'm always happy to see someone make a fool of Trump, I'm still worried that this is too good to be true.

Oh God! Natural light! The best Trump could get with dealing with Democrats is more border security. A wall is out of the question for most Democrats in the House and the Senate. Especially since we already have 2 fences on the border.
I think the wall is too toxic. Anything that got chanted at a Trump rally has to be a no go for the Democrats.
It would be equivalent to the Democrats supporting a special investigator into "her emails".
Anyway, in other news time has run out for Florida: Irma has just crossed the Keys and there are already fatalities. And flooding and storm winds all over the place.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'd say that a (relatively) good move would be to get funding for surveying the location where the wall will be and nothing else. Because a proper, thorough survey will take months, if not years, and the information it'll bring up will be, at the very least, not entirely useless. Especially since with the resulting information, it would be a lot easier to see exactly what the sky-high price of the wall would even be.
Not Three Laws compliant. That would be a good move in the sense that it would be a way to get concessions out of Trump without doing anything actually damaging, but it stills sounds like a pretty bad headline for the Dems.
Yup, we get dragged into that horrible world of optics again.
The wall has become bigger than just a question of the best way to regulate immigration on the southern border. Rejecting it therefore has to be on principle, not because it is not practical (which it isn't).
By agreeing to surveys, the Democrats concede that a physical barrier is the way to go on the border. That could be too high a price to pay.
If Trump cuts FEMA's budget immediately after two disasterous hurricanes, even he may not be able to recover from such a monumental fuck-up.
