The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Colbert uses extremely scientific methods and the latest in advanced technology to examine the Clinton Foundation Email Scandal.

God, we really are going to keep hearing "Hillary Email Scandal" trumpeted out until the heat death of the universe, aren't we?

Travis County, Texas GOP chairman Robert Morrow protested with a sign declaring Trump is a child rapist outside of Trump's rally in Austin.

That's just him making stuff up right? The Trump being part of AMBLA thing was just a joke right?

From what I understand, there have been serious rape accusations against him. I'm not sure if any were underage, but I think they might have been.

It's in reference to a lawsuit claiming that Trump sexually assaulted an underage girl four times in 1994.

“Immediately following this rape, Defendant Trump threatened me that, were I ever to reveal any of the details of Defendant Trump’s sexual and physical abuse of me, my family and I would be physically harmed if not killed,” the plaintiff said in an affidavit.

No idea about the validity of the claim. There are elements that sound outlandish, but that's usually true of rape so, y'know. Not going to be the guy saying, "This totally happened," but I'm not going to be the guy saying, "Let's just dismiss the rape accusation because bitches always be lying" either.

[up][up][up] Mississippi is the poorest state and has the worst education and obesity rate in the entire country. I'm not surprised.

Edit: Ugh, got Missouri confused with Mississippi!

[up]Your comment doesn't work whether it's Mississippi or Missouri. You missed the point, which isn't that Trump is ahead, it's just that he's barely ahead according to that poll.

I mean, a big part of that is the fact that many of us are at a loss for a single Republican politician we can point to and go, "Yeah, he's pretty good. I like the cut of his jib."
It's worth noting that this is a fairly recent development, in historical terms. Moderate Republican politicians are, by and large, no longer a thing. They either got primaried out by Tea Party candidate, made a major shift to the right to avoid being primaried out by Tea Party candidates, or defected to the Democrats when it became clear that the Republican party was going off the rails.

Note that I'm only talking about Republican politicians. There are still a bunch of moderate Republican voters. It remains to be seen whether most of them are going to hold their nose and vote Democrat, hold their nose and vote Trump, or just stay home on election day — but the polling doesn't look good for Trump.

The Tea Party as a whole was devastating for Moderates on Both Sides. The Tea Party primaried out Moderate Republicans and then won elections against Blue Dog Democrats. Only now does it seem like Moderate Republican voters have gotten fed up of the more extremist voices in the Republican Party.

So the byline to the rape charge article has Julian Assange say that Wikileaks is "working on" obtaining and releasing Trump's tax returns, though the site itself later used the "Just Joking" Justification in regards to it.

The nambla thing is a sort of internet conspiracy to get trump to release his tax returns. If we can get actual people to accuse him of it and make it a talking point he might actually be forced to release his tax returns

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

I'm surprised a law doesn't already exist for the FEC to make that a mandatory thing, releasing tax returns...

Fucked if I know. Assange himself is a madman who'll do anything to stick it to the US and most of the site's contributors are working on behalf of the Kremlin.

[up] So what would like the US to do about Wikileaks? Basically, go to war against them, go after the people behind the site? Bring back "Extraordinary Rendition" against Wikileaks?

To Assange, America is the Evil Empire, and thus any and all actions against it are justified. I tend to agree on the "Empire" part (evil is pointlessly inflammatory and arbitrary though), but not on the conclusion that anything that weakens the United States necessarily leaves the world better off. Especially if you're pushing it towards fascism.
