Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I don't think they could plausibly designate superdelegates at this point anyway for this cycle so it's not going to be an issue this cycle. And I don't think the implication of the original comment was intended for this election. For subsequent elections however, they've got time to discuss if that'll work for them.
Tactical has a hate on for Sanders in general that's kind of baffling. Like, I get that Sanders is increasingly losing his shine for various reasons, but it seems kind of extreme to actually loathe the guy. (I totally lack the ability to feel strongly about Sanders in either direction.)

Sure, it's called the Republican Party.
Not talking about the GOP as a whole, Silas. Talking about the explicit groups, some of which already show up at Trump rallies and have been involved in clashes in California (Source). The convention also seems like it's going to turn into a clown show.
Otherwise, the Trump campaign might land in trouble for inappropriate fundraising practices and the Benghazi report completely predictably has very little if anything on Hillary.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI know, I was just having a bit of fun, would have added an emote, but my keyboard has bugged the hell out.
Oh I am very curious on how the Republican party, and the media, will handle that. Especially if swastikas are seen flying outside the convention, let alone inside.
Despite them being some of their candidate's most fervent supporters though, no doubt the people in charge of the convention will want to keep the Black Shirts at an arm's distance and as low profile as possible.

FACEPALM
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Look at it this way: some of them are saying yes. That's definitely something.
The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the groundThat certainly validates the claims from the Icelandic Left Greens that they got fundraising emails from Trump's address. It really does look like this wasn't a fluke, and that his campaign is intentionally seeking financial support from foreign political groups, which has to be a pretty serious ethical breach if it's not outright illegal.
This should be investigated. So far there's no harm done because these emails seem to be reaching people who would never in the hell support Trump, but what if he's courting people like the French Front National, the UKIP or Russian government officials — who absolutely would shell out some bucks to help Trump? It'd be a very serious matter if a presidential hopeful got funding from foreign political interests.
Frankly, Trump's supporters are sufficiently engaged in destructive self-deception that they wouldn't care, and might well riot if his campaign were indicted before the election.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"As far as I know, soliciting donations from foreigners is indeed illegal.
Also, from the same article I find the thing about Trump's campaign:
This to me indicates that self-promotion may yield TV coverage, but not the funds to sustain a well-working campaign machine. Which may also explain why the fundraiser emails landed in the mailboxes of people who strongly disapprove of him.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanTrump has virtually no ground game. His campaign is "issues-focused", which means it doesn't bother doing mundane stuff like hiring competent people to oversee its data collection and voter solicitation systems. There's anecdotal information suggesting that the campaign intended to lean on the RNC to do all the legwork. He has no money and is only now starting to collect donations in any significant amount.
Trump is not running a Presidential campaign; he's running a cult of personality.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"This just in
"U.S. Joint Base Andrews on lockdown over active shooter report" - http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0ZG1X7
He's running a con. Hiring people would cut into his profit margin.
Honestly, Lawrence O'Donnell may've pointed out a while ago Trump just doesn't have the money to self-fund, and likely never gave any thought to what he'd do when he got THIS far.
I could've swore some journalist on MSNBC said that Trump likely only has $200 million in *actual* liquid assets.
Was that Lawrence?
New Survey coming this weekend! It's been noised around quite a bit, but I do specifically recall hearing it discussed on O'Donnell's program. You can't really cite a political show host as a "source" for data unless their own people did the journalism. I generally think of it as a shorthand for "sources cited on their program".

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Granted. O'Donnell was the first I remember discussing it, though.
Pleasepleasepleaseplease let this end with Trump not in the White House and headed for jail.
Trump delenda estThen again, wouldn't that make for great talk show clips?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'd settle for him bankrupting himself during the campaign and then losing the election so badly that Hillary Clinton gets no less than two votes for every one Trump gets.
Donald Trump cannot be allowed to merely lose the election, he needs to be humiliated so badly that the very ideas he represents are discredited in anything resembling mainstream politics for generations to come.
...In case you haven't noticed, I am probably not going to be voting for Trump in November.
You guys realize people like Sheldon Adelson et al will probably pick up his tab, right?
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...Also, did anyone read about white supremacist groups who are planning to attend the RNC convention? There was an article in the Washington Post about this.
This is the main reason I'm a little worried for Clinton's safety. Between the controversy over whether Trump's faithful can bring guns into the RNC and his unambiguous intentions to start riots if he doesn't get the nomination, I can't help but wonder what he and his people are going to be like in November.
Trump is very popular with the violent nutjob fringe. I don't want the headline, "Clinton wins Presidency" to be immediately followed by, "Clinton murdered."
My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.
<yawn> There are some dodgy aspects to that Puerto Rico bill. Ditto for free trade (especially its practical implementation).
Incidentally, I don't know if the RNC making superdelegates would help. Trump has thrown hints that he'd start protests and possibly riots if he was denied the nomination, and part of the reason why his share of the GOP vote went up between Wisconsin's and New York's primaries was because people just wanted to get over the primary. It is possible that GOP superdelegates would end up folding like a lawn chair, or being hurt/killed by outraged Trump supporters.
