Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

No matter who Clinton selects, they won't be as awesome as Joe "the Crazy Uncle of Democratic politics" Biden.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Well, it worked, didn't it? With Quayle as the VP, no-one did assassinate Bush. QED.
“Now look! That damned cowboy is president of the United States!”
Just in case you're wondering where the idea of the vice-president being assassination prevention for the current president came from.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)The Secret Service: Canceling Vice Presidential promotions since 1865!
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"Don't forget Mc Kinley.
Either you're not reading mine and/or his post correctly, or your memory of the history and order of the presidents is messed up. I cannot tell which.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Na, he's reading the post correctly. McKinley was assassinated in 1901, after 1865. And the Secret Service was tasked in 1906 with Presidential security.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanUh, if it was "since 1865", and 1901 comes after it, why would he have to remember McKinley since that time frame would include that? (Accusing him of forgetting McKinley only makes sense if McKinley was assassinated BEFORE then.)
I'm starting to think I am the only one who read the post correctly, now.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Because the post says "since 1865", as in there have been no VP promotions since then, when there has been.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranEh? The Secret Service did not cancel Roosevelt's and Arthur's advents which happened after 1865.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI don't mean that they've cancelled every "Vice Presidential Promotions", just that they've been canceling them as part of their overall mission.
"Any campaign world where an orc samurai can leap off a landcruiser to fight a herd of Bulbasaurs will always have my vote of confidence"Except Mc Kinley's then.
That's like the carved wooden figurehead detaching itself from the sinking ship and saying Screw This, I'm Out of Here!
This Space Intentionally Left Blank.Any other politician would be fucked over by their crazy base for falling back on a pledge like that. But Trump is basically immune to reality so...
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Perez is the guy if we want a VP who'll fight for working families.
If he wins, he better not consider the Philippines a terror country.
OK, sorry, that's idiotic. The fact that, say, Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism doesn't make each and every Iranian citizen a terrorist.
The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the groundA comparison between the Brexit and Trump campaigns, especially in terms of how likely the success for the former means predicts a success of the latter.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanTrump will probably be BFF's with Duarte,so I doubt he will consider the Philippines as "terror country."
I Bring Doom, and a bit of gloom, but mostly gloom.
What's helping, though is that Scotland may very well hold (and succeed) in another vote for Independence in the wake of the Brexit vote. As the article points out, while the measure to separate from the UK failed, 55-45, Scotland also voted to stay in the EU with a 62-38 split. So depending on how much of that 62% made up that 55% that voted to remain in the UK, a revote on the Independence issue might be drastically different.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Trump is missing the point that a good number of the people who leave Iran will do so because they dislike the Iranian government.
Yeah, a lot of the Iranian diaspora is hostile not just to political Islamism, but Islam in general.
I don't think that's ever been a thing in American politics. And it only became a Running Gag in regard to Dan Quayle.
