Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Did you read it to see if Wolf had declared one too, Fighteer?
A damn state of emergency is the only thing that'll shut down University of Pittsburgh.
Of course, since my job is also there and i get paid hourly...
I dunno, having lived in Jersey they probably need to be told twice to pay attention.
Oh really when? They meant New York, but still, bad proofreading is bad. And no, Pennsylvania has not declared a state of emergency. We aren't getting as bad a hit as the other northeastern states. Still, I expect that I won't be going to work tomorrow, and everyone's preparing for stuff to be closed.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The snow's lulled for now, but it's windy as fuck outside, I can even hear it howl if I focus enough.
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.Looks like we (Halifax) are supposed to get 15-30cms over about 24 hours, could be a lot worse.
How bad is/was it further south?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects."Christie's state is so awesome they counted it twice."
No, you see they were talking Governors. Christie counts as 2. You think the "My Governor can eat your Governor" bumper stickers are a joke? He ate Cuomo before the last press conference.

I'm baaaaaaack"GLOBAL WARMING, HUH?"
I'm a precog.
Hey, it's been a pretty wimpy winter up until now. Scarily so on the balance.
Yeah in the West it's been a really warm winter. We're expecting droughts later on because there hasn't been hardly any snow in the mountains.
Isn't the thing about global warming mean that there's going to be more drastic weather shifts? Kind of like we're having right now, actually?
Yes but obviously global warming is false, look how cold it is!
Oh really when?Hence the push to use the term "global climate change" instead.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. It's actually very pleasant in the Deep South right now. We're getting back up to early Spring temperatures. I for one approve of this new short winter season.
Do your duty as an American citizen: buy a humvee and kill that Commie bastard General Winter!
But that's a story for another time.It has been a very mild winter here in Wisconsin as well. My officemate is constantly grumbling about the fact that he hasn't been able to use his snowmobile all season.
Summer will be a burning bitch in heat though. I am not looking forward to that.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurThe reason we talk about "global warming" is that there've been studies showing that "climate change" lacks the same emotional impact in audiences. As much as we'd like to think that there is an educated, socially responsible soul at the core of every human being, in reality selling the need for environmental action is exactly like selling any other idea: an exercise in marketing.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Plus the world is getting warmer on average. Republicans just like using the fact that the seasons still work as an attempted counter to that.
If it ever stopped being cold in winter, something is very wrong. Namely the tilt of the earth. Winters gonna be colder, that's just how planets work. (Barring one with nearly perpendicular poles and orbital planes)

Old forums let me be logged on multiple devices. Now it doesn\'t, and I don\'t feel like fighting my phone every time I want to post. The question to be asking is could the protagonist of American Sniper been portrayed as heroic if it were a Taliban sniper picking off U.S. troops in the mountains?
Ironically, the Taliban were portrayed as heroes back when they were shooting Soviets.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayA lot of the buzz surrounding climate science isn't helped by climate change denialists who intentionally make the science itself more complicated than it really is. Appeals to populism are a regular talking point of denialists despite a clear misunderstanding of how appeals to populism work in debates when contrasted with scientific consensus. Scientific consensus is not the same as general consensus based on untested values and beliefs, and denialists regularly miss this point.
The actual science behind climate change is relatively simple, and most of it can be understood through the study of high school chemistry, physics and ecology. For example, the whole "we're getting tons of snow" argument. Seeing higher levels of snow is secondary to the fact that we are seeing higher levels of precipitation, which is triggered by higher levels of humidity, which is aggravated by higher CO 2 deposits in the atmosphere. There's also confusion (again, fueled by willful ignorance) about how the upper atmosphere is cooling while the lower atmosphere is warming.
Perhaps the biggest political obstacle to anthropogenic climate change acceptance is the argument that environmental countermeasures are too economically detrimental in the short term.
It's from the Huffington Post, but Sarah Palin apparently ad-libbed a very weird speech. The reactions of the various pundits is probably the best part of the thing.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotNorway laughs at your snow

Do it, that'd be sooooo nice to see.
Oh really when?
Proofread your articles, guys. "The governors of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New Jersey ..." Christie's state is so awesome they counted it twice.
