Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Really nice to see the veteran thing. It does make me wonder though, housing vouchers obviously help the homeless get a home. Does that also lead to better employment rates?
That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - SilaswOne imagines that from a purely prosaic standpoint, having a home to live in and the concomitant amenities: showers, presumably regular food, and so on, improves one's ability to seek work. From an economic standpoint, if the homes are being paid for with tax dollars, they have a multiplier greater than 1 and as such confer a net boost to demand and therefore employment.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Also, people who aren't on the street tend to generate more demand than people who are. So it would very likely lead to better employment everywhere nearby.

Get rid of that entire fucking police district and start over again. Holy shit.
Yeah, i think there's going to be a real demand for firings from the top of that department on down. The question is how much turnover will actually occur.
I wonder if it's possible to dismiss the police department by an initiative? "Every police officer in Ferguson is hereby fired and permanently blacklisted from ever working for this city again."
My only concern is that there's going to be good officers caught up in it.
not everyone can be a dick. but God there's either a lot of them or they're VERY active about being dicks. I mean desecrating memorials? really?
I'm baaaaaaackThe article says that the neighboring municipality of Jennings dissolved its police force in 2011 for similar problems.
Yeah, but when organizations get that corrupt, and people on the inside can't fix them, it's time to sweep clean with a new broom.
The country of Georgia fired its entire traffic police force some years back for acting like the Mafia. Problems with traffic went way down.
Good lord, those assholes almost maced one of their own state representatives.
...please, somebody give me a better idea than "take some of that gear the army wants to dispose of and use it to arm and train the protestors." Please.
The police in Ferguson are completely out of control.
Can't the National Guard go kick their ass?
Oh really when? They already sent in the state troopers, which worked while they were there, but the moment the troopers left it was right back to business as usual.
Drop the whole department and have the State Troopers or the National Guard stand in until they replace it.
Oh really when?Disband the police force, institute martial law and order the national guard in to control (and if need be remove the police by force), send in federal troops to remove the police and maintain law and order.
That's three suggestions right there. As someone said, calling the police militarised is an insult to the military, the police aren't acting like solders, they're acting like extras playing soldiers in a bad action movie.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranWhew. Thank you.
Yeah. I wonder if the first step would be for the protestors to actually start speaking against the police force as a whole and protesting in favor of a disbandment.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016...I thought Texas judges were elected. What's in the water in their courthouses?
I've got a question about the Ferguson situation. I've been hearing that the community there is majority black, but the police force is over 90% white. How exactly does a situation like that come about? Did a lot of the police officers there transfer from other locale, or are there some factors at play discouraging black people in Ferguson from becoming police officers and/or discouraging the police department there from accepting them?
I don't think you have to live in the municipality to join the police force, is what it is.
One would think that would be a rule in police force hiring, moreso than other forms of local government hiring because the police force HAS to have the confidence of the local populace, or else you get... this. Make it so that they can only hire from outside the municipality if they are unable to find enough qualified applicants from inside. Surely plenty of Ferguson residents have experience as security guards or hold criminal justice degrees or something.
The Dreamer thing is hilarious is despite Rubio taking the hard right response, on the comments everyone still calls him a RINO.
I guess to the Republican Base, if you're not Ted Cruz and your position on Immigration is less than "Kill em All" you're a RINO.
