Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Except that most of the things he says don't make any sense.
"Oh yeah lets try to disband the FBI!"
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsAs far as I can tell Ron Paul is only liked by privileged young white people that want marijuana legalized and think things would be easier if they could just ignore everyone's needs but their own. Basically if you like him after you graduate college you probably have some growing up to do.
He also resonates with the anti-war crowd.
Though, as Rational Wiki pointed out, his "solution" to the threat of terrorism would be to place massive ($40bn) bounties on America's enemies, essentially replacing the War on Terror with a giant mercenary free-for-all. It's a pretty good metaphor for his ideology as a whole actually; "well, I'm not ruining your country, the mercenaries after my enormous pile of gold are, so how can I be liable?! It's not like my actions have consequences for others!"
Schild und Schwert der ParteiFree Market Counterterrorism?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"That actually sounds like an interesting Manga premise...which obviously means its real life approach is a horrible idea.
"You can reply to this Message!"Isn't that the backstory of MAG?
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsWhat's even dumber, it misses the point that every time we kill the no. 2 guy, a new one shows up.
Then again, we spend a lot of money killing no. 2 guys...
The bigger problem is that we're giving an incentive to kill or harass anyone who looks like, or is related to the person in question to anyone with a gun. For all that the US has problems distinguishing between enemies and civilians, that's going to pale compared to the amount of collateral damage giving anyone with a gun, a chip on their shoulder, and a desire for cash the justification to go around playing bounty hunter will cause.

It isn't a bad manga idea, something in the vein of Canaan or Black Lagoon.
Ooh, or Full Metal Panic.

Metal Ger Solid 4 (or really the series in general) does a decent job of explaining why a private soldier industry on that scale would be a really bad idea, but we digress.
Ron Paul's ideas seem to be based more on political fashion sense than rational, long-term thinking, but in all fairness, he's not the only one who exploits that trendiness. A lot of human nature can explained by our desire to belong to something that makes us feel special, to part of the "in" group, or to identify ourselves as the sole keepers of some sacred truth that others cannot comprehend. I feel that libertarianism, while sounding good on paper, attracts many people who are basically wanting to be part of the political "cool" club, and this isn't the first time this has happened. I believe every political ideology has its followers who adhere to those principles based on popular rhetoric rather than the fundamental qualities contained in their ideology of choice.
I suspect that Libertarianism also attracts a lot of people with poor analysis skills - because you need these to know why you can't leave the EPA's job to the oil companies, for example.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThings like Libertarianism sound great if you don't think about it often.
Once you do some proper thinking and actually plan it all out in the long term do you realize it's a stupid idea.
Problem is not too many people do heavy thinking on political ideas.

@Tomu: The lawsuit may be a way to tie up MoveOn's financial resources rather than a serious attempt to win a judgement.
Hmm. I was wondering what slant the case would take; it seems that it's being decided on the basis of a woman's right to control her body and to have privacy. It only applies to unmarried spouses, so married fathers can still demand to be there against the mother's wishes, one imagines. They might not stay married for long afterwards, though.
This is apparently the first time the matter has ever been ruled on in court. The issue was a father's parental rights versus the mother's right to privacy.

@joesolo: This was way back in the 80s and yeah the union sucked. When we went on strike we got little to no support from the greater union.
