The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This still seems a little early for a thread on the topic. I'd wait until the Republican primary campaigns actually start warming up.

storyyeller: I'm tempted to switch to Republican so I can vote in the primaries. Too bad I don't live in Iowa or New Hampshire.
Heh, reminds me of my dad, a lifelong “Republican.”

I just beg all of you, of any poltical orientation, to do whatever you possibly can to keep Rick Perry from getting the presidency. I know he has a snowballs chance in hell, but he's done such a great job of fucking with Texas already (hay guys we're overbudget! Good thing we didn't take that federal aid money! Use the rainy day fund? Surely there could be something out there more important! See, we can just murder our schools! It's all good!) that if he did take the presidency I would move to Canada. He is such an awful governor and an awful person, so please, at least go for someone remotely sane when you vote.

Well my personal favorite for the nomination is Bachman. She looks like the most unelectable of the current frontrunners.

Really now? She seemed to be doing the best out of the GOP candidates.

She appeals to the base, but not to the wider electorate.

Just like every other politician when they want the nomination of their party, when it comes to the general election they either move back to the center or they die.

Bachmann is the front-runner?

It looks like Romney is the best of the bunch.

So, who would vote the most? Because if young professionals vote, it'll be a Democrat victory. If more older or Bible Belt voters come out it's a GOP win.

^ I can tell you this from experience (because I am amongst young voters) the youth vote is horribly unreliable. 2008's surge in youth voting was a flash in the pan that didn't materialize even 1/10 its strength in the 2010 election.

I vote in every Federal (and State) election, I'm the exception not the rule.

I don't know, Bachmann wants to outlaw porn. I'm pretty sure she's just alienated a pretty good deal of her base if perverted old GOP senators are any indication.

[up] GOP opposes porn in theory, of course. Doesn't mean they actually want it to happen.

Bachmann probably won't get the nomination. She's too radical, and waaaaay too stupid. if she does get it, I will eat my shoelaces. What's likely to happen is Romney will get the nomination, and then Bachmann will be her vp.

I'm uncomfortable enough with her being in Congress, let alone a heartbeat from the Presidency.

Fortunately, she's a horrible congresswoman. She can't negotiate worth a damn and has no skills which allow senators to be effective.

Get some leather shoelaces, you really don't want to eat nylon. At least make sure to get something made from natural fibers.

And might I suggest converting your car to an Autobot? That would be suitable be insane.

I'd laugh if she DOES get the nomination, the Obama administration just plays up the "ban porn" thing constantly.

Sure the GOP can go "WHAT ARE YOU? A PORN ADDICT?" but then watch as people who normally dont vote go "OH SHIT WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN"

but then watch as people who normally dont vote go "OH SHIT WE CANNOT LET THIS HAPPEN"

That didn't happen the last 22 times a politician emerged who wanted to ban porn.

She's neither the first nor last on that idea.
