Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Especially when your voterbase still lives in the Cold War.
I notice that in any "True the Vote" news article that wonders if its voter intimidation, the comment section is swarmed by attacks on the author of the article or whoever is criticizing it.
well, yeah. Thats because any effort that impugns the helpfulness, good intentions, and righteousness of "saving america" is liberal conspiracy.
The comments section of a news article is generally not the place to go if you want a good opinion of people in general. There's ignorance coming from all sides in them.
But in general I see as many liberal or moderate people attacking the people who are attacking the article. These voting issues have brought out all the angry in people, for good reason.
I had no idea TLC was founded by NASA.
Depressing.

That is the single greatest explanation for why Romney wanting to cut PBS' funding is an absolutely disgusting affair.
Pearls of wisdom from Jon Stewart
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryJon Stewart is awesome.
That entire debate was enjoyable.
Even Bill O had a few nuggets of wisdom at times.
Sigh..and no Mr. Rogers to defend PBS this time.

Didn't Romney already cause a diplomatic problem with something he said about Iran?
Now he's mouthing off and saying he supports an Israel-Iran war, again?
He's a massive, massive fucking idiot.
No, really. You can convince me he's just being selfish or oblivious with domestic economic policies. But advocating involvement in an Israel-Iran war (other than "SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP") is just fucking stupid.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.-reads speech-
...
I do not want this man conducting affairs with Britain, the European Union, or any European state.
I'd look at you strangely if you did.
Well, let's hope Obama doesn't flub the second debate then.
I was writing them off, but it does look like Romney got a minor bump. Not enough to put him in the lead, but enough to make things "interesting."
That speech scared me.
Oh, as an aside, how is the BAE Systems-Eads merger being viewed by the US government?
@ Kos. Well, that makes many millions.
I don't feel like reading that long tirade. What exactly scared you about it?

I just... what... fuck. You can't make this shit up.
Well, who owns the land?
Not those bloody tar sands. -sigh-
They're not even in Europe, and they're already made us pretty pissed off at Canada (and America, to a slightly lesser extent).
Why does that surprise you? Eminent domain is a thing.

Unless there's some bad information in that article, she owns it.
I thought eminent domain supersedes that.
edit: Apparently I misspelled it.

And do Romney and the GOP seriously believe that it's a sign of weakness for Obama to reach out and try to make peace with other countries? Given the choice between having a huge military to protect us from all the people we've pissed off, and not needing one because we actually play well with others, give me option 2 any day.
Because honestly, it sounds to me like Romney is admitting that he wants to go around provoking other countries, and that we'll need a bigger military because of all the assholery he wants to engage in. Am I reading him wrong?
What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.
