Pony Fanfiction Thread

It's short, recently posted, and touches on a very popular and recent event in the fandom's collective experience. That's pretty much the trifecta of ways for a story to get noticed.

Feel happy that your story has clearly filled an emotional need that many people had.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy people like it, but at the same time I wish the works I put much more time, care, and effort into got that much attention. Nothing much I can do about it, I guess, it just leaves me feeling really conflicted.

On that note, I started a trope page for my in-progress MLP/Magic: the Gathering crossover series, My Little Planeswalker. It's still largely unfinished, but I'm well aware I don't really control what goes on the page and am hoping someone else can help populate it with examples.

Been considering cancelling my Afternoon Summit fic in favor of writing a series of more light-hearted fics not front loaded with all my original lore.

Since there was minor plot point in it, Rarity's pet names, being used elsewhere, I'd have to figure out how to reintroduce that.

Considering starting my Five Nights At Twilight's fic and use that.

Late draft is late.

I think, after Lessons in Chaos, I'm going to experiment with shorter chapters posted more frequently. I worry that my chapters are too long and result in insufficient stopping points.

A bit late, but that's because I've got a big one here. During initial proofreading and revision, I tried to find a good place to cut it in half and make two chapters, but nothing really called out to me.

Gathering some ideas for a Steven Universe crossover.

How would the differing casts play off of each other?

Thinking of writing a G1 fanfic based on a throwaway line from the movie, where Hydia mentions a "Malevia from Nightmare Heights who made Easter Sunday come up on a Tuesday."

An interesting thought experiment from a Fimfic blog. I don't think there's a "right" answer to the question, but the answer will depend on your headcanon about how pegasus magic works (and possibly pony magic in general).

Okay, for my answer, in the Truthseekerverse, she could still fly, because pegasi are actually levitating themselves instead of relying on actual air. For similar reasons, pegasi can fly in a vacuum.

To expand, if AJ was in a glass box and you sprinkled some soil inside, she could grow plants in that soil. However, she would not be able to affect soil outside the box as she'd need to touch it.

Unicorn spells work like light, so can pass through glass, but if the glass was replaced with something opaque, it would block spells that weren't specifically designed for countering light-blocking material (this is actually one of the limitations of teleportation. You can't teleport through an opaque barrier).

A donkey would be able to scale the inside of a glass box. Changelings would not be able to fly, because they are too dependent on actual air for flight, but their shapeshifting and blasts would be unaffected. Both pegasi and springboks would only be able to manipulate weather inside the box, but springboks would retain their ability to manipulate their own bodies. Bell-using species have their magic work like sound instead of unicorns' light. Warthogs are only dependent on the paint on their skin. Their biggest weakness would be removing their ability to tell what colour they'd been painted. Zebras are fine as long as they have their tools. Elephants wouldn't be able to fly, because they take on the properties of birds. They could still levitate carpets and ropes though. Again, most of their magic is sound based. Hyraxes can shoot through the glass or target the glass itself (similar to using lasers to treat cancer). Kudus can still produce fire as long as they have oxygen.

Anything else anyone wants to ask about?

My own headcanon, which has been reinforced by the opening to the movie, is that pegasi use wind currents when they can for their flight, but for the most part, that's not enough and they generally need to use magic to assist their flight. Strong fliers have more magic, allowing them to go against the usual physics even more than normal. Objects, such as trailers, attached to a willing pegasus will be carried along with them, provided their magic is strong enough.
