Where was this when we were kids?

It would have the additional benefit of making people distrustful of social engineering, therefore leading to them being ever so slightly more independent-minded.

And this is allowed to be held? These people are crazy, they're basically creating new generations of idiots such as Lulzsec.

Milos: I doubt actually learning about hacking will do that, though.

It could make kids more interested in it. I'm not saying that it should be banned, but encouraging this stuff is foolish.

Also, there's a difference between the rest of the hacker community and Lulzsec, it seems. Remember, even other hackers were annoyed by them.

Plus, there'll be adults there, so hopefully they won't be caught in a Lulzsec kind of thing.

That and the machine gun nerf guns...and iPods...and ubiquitous cell phones...and the internet (well, it was around but hardly anyone had it, and I hadn't even heard of it), and...and oh no I'm really dating myself with this post.

Of course, I also couldn't hitchhike all the way to St. Louis, or play baseball with the kids in the neighborhood, or sell newspapers for 25c on the street corner when I was 10 and keep a nickel out of each *

But today's kids will probably never remember playing Oregon Trail on the old Apples, or the early, wilder internet, or even remember how they felt about 9/11/01 (4-5 years younger than me and they would probably have had trouble understanding it).

All a matter of perspective. If you're not careful, you'll end up saying the same things your parents/grandparents say/said: "kids these days, they don't appreciate x, don't know how to do y, the sun was so much brighter and the sky so much bluer back in my day."

Look, you can't make me speak in a logical, coherent, intelligent bananna.

If I understand right, Defcon is a general computer security conference. So subject-wise, at least, it's comparable to a locksmith convention? Which you probably wouldn't worry about turning kids into burglars...

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?

i expected this to be a discussion of how back in the dsy kids had to do hard work and learn their parents' trades.

but this is cool too.

[up][up][up] Yeah, I kinda interpreted it that way too, or at least responded to it in that manner.

The conference itself is pretty cool, but I'm not sure what else to say about it.

i feel old whenever i find myself on sites where most people are younger than i am.

it's because back when i was their age i was surrounded mostly by older people and felt young.

This is essentially a creche with its own activities for kids (and at least one guardian) to keep them occupied while the dad (or very rarely, the mum) goes to do all the hackerish hobnobbing they used to do before they had kids.

So if you feel old, spare a thought for these guys :)

I'm only 15 and I feel old. My little cousin (about 11) asked me what a CD does and what a My Space was. I felt like yelling at young people to start paying my pension after that.

[up] Back in my day, Youtube wasn't considered a hive of scum and villany (and stupidity), we talked about deep, intricate subjects like Chuck Norris Facts and we had none of this Rebecca Black shit, we had to find our own memes and lulz.

Disclaimer: If anyone disagrees with anything I say, I am quite prepared to not only retract it, but also to deny under oath I ever said it.
