In all of former Yugoslavia, membership in the EU is universally presented as something inevitable, with no other option available, and the most important issue there could be is joining the EU as quickly as possible, even though the people themselves are relatively sceptical. I'm not against EU per se, but the governements assume a completely non-critical, ruthless and ridiculously idealistic attitude towards membership in the EU, which tends to alienate me from the idea. I don't like to be presented with ultimatums which don't even need to be fulfilled.

[up][up]Czechia and Slovakia? They're doing fine, economically. Of course, they should have been forced to abolish the Benes decrees.

Admitting Croatia in the EU is far less of a mistake then Romania, Bulgaria and Greece.

Let's see if the EU will exist before Bosnia fulfils its conditions.

[up] It will! It's the world second or first biggest economy. Even with Greece it still is powerful. The Euro money thingy may crash, but the grand supranation will not!

[up][up] If they don't finally split up Bosnia it might even outlive the EU just like the DRA outlived the USSR.

[up] Wait what? You want Bosnia to split up, or the Great Supranation? Because if its the latter, my dreams of a Grand Federation will be crushed.

[up][up]In that case, should the Serbian Republic remain independent, or merge with Serbia?

Why not let them join Serbia, if a referendum decides so? This clinging to established borders even against the wishes of the population creates more ill than good, and is undemocratic, too. At least, that's my opinion. Of course, I'm rather far away from that place, heh.

Unfortunately last time they tried that a whole lot of people, you know... well, died.

I never got the partition of Yugoslavia. Making it a Swiss-style loose confederation and saying we're not going to meddle on each other's issues would have been much simpler, easier and cleaner. And they'd all be in the EU by now.

[up][up][up][up]I was just joking.

[up][up][up]Unfortunately, people are irrational. Yugoslavia was under a treaty which would have made it one of the founding members of the EU, if it only managed to hold together until 1993. sad

I dunno; how period are we talking?

Back on topic; I don't see what is wrong with Croatia joining as long as its financially stable. Being poor isn't such a big deal as the whole point of the EU is to steadily bring everyone up to scratch and create a larger, more equal and more powerful whole. So long as the newcomers don't cause a system crash, Europe should keep going fine.

Its not poor countries that will cause a collapse, its unstable ones.

Based on what I know of Croatia, it seems that they're doing very well and it's to be expected that in 2013, they'll be ready to join.

I don't know. What is a bit ironic is that during the war Tuđman and Milošević were negotiating how they could carve up Bosnia between Croatia and Serbia. Today, with the exception of some ultra nationalist nutbars, no one in Zagreb and Belgrade is interested in a single acre of BiH. An independent Republika Srpska would be cool, merging it with Serbia even more. Some might say that this would reward the ethnic cleansings but you can't force people to live together against their will. Besides, Dayton was supposed to be a temporary solution.

Having the croatians join the common market will finally put an end to the terrible vowel shortage that has been plaguing the country.

Point that somewhere else, or I'll reengage the harmonic tachyon modulator.

I think he refers to the fact that Croatia is called by Croatians Hrvatska.
