I hate when people play the game and absolutely fail at every action command, but maybe that's just a personal irk.

You aren't alone in that regard. I cringe a little every time I see someone playing a Mario & Luigi RPG and they don't input any button when the Bros attack or are attacked and wonder why the game's so hard.
Just a hunch, but those people are probably among those people who skip all the tutorials because who wants to read all that text? I want to play the game!

Maybe Sticker Star and Dream Team jaded me, but I just can't get hyped for Paper Jam. It looks so souless. 
Sticker Star has no bearing on Paper Jam. This is all AlphaDream. Dream Team was flawed, but it was still fun overall. And it seems like this will have skippable tutorials. So this should turn out good. Please let me be positive about something.

Decided to hop on here since there's no thread for Paper Jam yet.
So is the fact that the Paper characters are...paper acknowledged in universe? Considering the often meta-nature of both series, I'd find it hard to believe it isn't, but I was wondering about it.

So far it looks like at least link and Wii fit trainer are compatible
If we assume the little intermissions were all actually in the game, then Marth is available as well. If they're willing to let characters not directly owned by Nintendo in, then I assume everyone works in it, or at least everyone who could properly platform.

They are compatible with Woolly World, though, if I'm not mistaken. At least, the trailer for amiibo compatability showed a scrolling list of amiibos and among them were the Pokemon.
