Bobby: On a completely different note, I like Haven's suggestion a lot, but at the same time, I can imagine I'd kinda hate the author for it while still not being able to stop reading.

I'll take that as high praise.

On the other hand, allowing the second personality to not give up his "life" would make him less heroic in the eyes of the reader.

I'm really not trying to make the second personality come across as completely heroic. What I had more in mind was a sort of an anti-hero type character, a former villain trying to turn his life around, but still has that dark streak inside of him. So I think the less heroic choice for the second personality would be the best.

Why does the father hold the final word? I'd say the second is the only one who's opinion really matters.

Mostly because the father currently has custody of the character. The father just happens to be in law enforcement and has the second character in custody during his attempts to murder his past self. It is after the dad arrested his alternate son did they all discover his true origins, (up until then, it was assumed he was some sort of evil clone) and that they could revert him back to his original self.

Is our Self #2 okay with the idea of being erased to allow his "true" identity to return?

Absolutely not. He continues the "true" identity to be a moron and is actually embarrassed when he found out that they are one and the same, and does not wish for his body to go back to such a moron. Plus, he loves living too much.

"Personality Death" is a recurring controversy in the various transformation fetish story communities I've been involved with over the years

I had no idea. That's something I would like to look into.

If you really want the story to stick with the reader, have the character shot immediately after a decision is reached, but never let the audience find out what the decision was. Maybe even set things up so that it's ambiguous which personality is in place at the time, if you can. Then make the rest of the story short and about going after the shooter, who either gets away or is caught after a very quick chase.

I do like the premise of this idea, but it's not going to work with this set of characters. The character in question is pretty much the main character, and killing him off, either personality, just seems unthinkable. There are other reasons why this won't work, but I'd rather not get into those reasons here. It might be a good premise for an original story with some other set of characters.

I don't suppose the two people could share the body, leaving him with a split personality? Or the original somehow 'living inside' the second personality?

I considered that, but if I do, it won't be until long after everybody has agreed which personality shall live and the issue has long been forgotten.

Thanks for all of your input. I've decided that I am going to let the second personality live. The father would initially want his original son to come back, but the second personality didn't like that idea and fought back and escaped. After thinking about the situation from all the different angles discussed above, the father does finally decide that letting the second personality remain would be the best decision, and honor the original personality with a proper funeral, finally putting him to rest, exactly what he figured his son would want.

The second personality does decide to turn his life around, although not becoming the complete hero that his predecessor was, but instead to do things his own way as a self proclaimed Anti-Hero.

Eventually, the second personality discovers that the original personality still exists dormant inside his mind, and is able to communicate with him through his dreams. They do figure out a way they can share the body and exist together.

Anyone here ever played Kot OR? I mean, a new identity isn't really murder in my viewpoint. A crime maybe, but not murder.

You could always go for the "He was inside me all along" type of ending, where the first's personality is still there, but the second just forgot about it. To add drama you could make it so that the second doesn't realize it until part-way through the surgery, and then they have to abort it somehow... heh, actually I really like your plot..

Whatever ending you choose, when it's done it will be an interesting read.

[up][up][up] Since you expressed a mild interest, here's a story I wrote where "personality death" is taken a little more literally than normal. Warning: while the story itself is safe for work, the site that hosts it is not.
