I'll admit I'm not quite clear on what "Yare Yare" means. It's translated as "Good grief" here, but it's the same as the "Yare Yare" as in Rainy Day right?

In Rainy Day I got the impression it was more a sigh of acceptance... Basically carrying less of the connotations of "Look what I have to put up with".

Would anyone mind explaining its actual meaning to me?

It's, um, complicated. It's kind of just an expression of mild-to-middling exasperation. Pretty context sensitive.

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.

If it is Good Grief...

  • Haruhi: Lucy van Pelt
  • Itsuki: Linus Van Pelt
  • Little Sister: Sally Brown
  • Yuki: Marcie
  • Mikuru: Little Red-Haired Girl, who keeps vanishing out of the current time period.

No?

[up][up][up] I knew it was complicated (which I imagine is why it wasn't translated in Rainy Day, but I hoped it was at least a little describable.

Anyway, based on that, I guess the point of the end of Rainy Day was when Kyon said it while with Saki she took it as a stronger expression of his feelings than he meant?

That's Sasaki. And maybe; I can't really remember much of Rainy Day. Apparently it's been retranslated now, anyway, so I should reread it.

What was that "personal matter" that the girl with the enclosed bright skies couldn't say to the boy who forced her smile to be stuck in the on position? waii

Such a thing could obviously be anything you could imagine it to be, provided it fitted the parameters of being "Personal" "to share" and likely "embarrassing".

Another strange point.

The term one time traveler uses can mean either older sister or a slightly older and quite close female friend.

The other time traveler instantly responds saying she has no literal little brother with some side comments that indicate anymore.

Therefore there is an alpha-beta split in the far future that breaks a family apart?

No, the alpha beta split seems to happen before her younger brother is born. So in one timeline the brother is never born while in another they're both born but the sister dies. The elder Mikuru said things to the effect that she never had a little brother.

On the whole "yare yare" point: I had difficulties seeing Sasaki going "Good grief" with how the rest of her dialogue went, so I kept it untranslated. Due to complaints about it, I chose to put it as "Good grief" when Kyon uses it/in the profile as it fits his character a lot better. Like it was mentioned, it's just a phrase to illustrate frustration. It could translate to many different things. I just lack creativity in other situations.

Why I went back and re-edited "Rainy Day": After working on more parts of "Surprise": I got better at translating and not transliterating. Instead of just copying the exact Japanese sayings into an English sentence, I added the little details that make it readable in English. Sasaki's dialogue in the classroom mirrors Haruhi's in "Surprise" and I wanted that to be shown, thus I had to go back and fix everything else that was horribly done IMO. I grew better at having a "Sasaki" voice as the other non-animated characters were simpler to write.

I felt one of the most important priorities in "Surprise" was parallels between alpha and beta. There were many times where moments were supposed to correspond to other people/events and I tried my best to highlight those parallels.

wild mass guess Yuki shot first fridge brilliance:

Where is the least sensible place to put the enemy's final objective?

Which refrigerator does Yuki stuff a depowered Haruhi in?

Suou knows that Yuki would not do this, so will continue to search at North High, after her contact there recovers from the flu.

The only thing that could thwart Yuki's attempt to save the world? Kyon with a dart gun.

[up] Would not the phrase "Yeah, yeah" work as an adequate replacement for "Yare, yare", for both Kyon and Sasaki? Remember that she gets a magic point every time he repeats her, while Haruhi has to have Kyon trace out her drawings.

Haruhi and Sasaki harvest Psi Points from Kyon's brain to feed their espers, not magic points.

...I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. "Psi points" make just as much sense to me here as "magic points" do.

Possibly his own.

Review the facts.

  • The bastard from the future says that Kyon is the key.
  • Haruhi is very very keen to have Kyon trace patterns as per her direction. C.f. Middle school quad, reshape web logo, even the camera is to be used only at her exact direction.

I think these two are related.

With a story like this I can't deny that anything may be related.

Psi points however, are not mentioned in the story.

[up] Haruhi: "Able to handle everything with easy ___"

I think you have a missing word there.

And it's a pain that the translated text is rendered as graphics.

Otherwise nicely done.

[up][up] Maybe I'm posting at the wrong place but still: on Kyon's profile, does it really say (in the original Japanese) he lives with his parents? I ask because it'd be the first mention of Kyon's father as far as I remember, albeit an indirect one.

Great work and thanks for the translations!

It'd be even more conspicuous if it specified only a single parent.

Why? He could have died a few years ago. Now for all we know Kyon could be Ash's half-brother.

Known family links:

  • The time travelers: unsiblings. (My name is _____. You wiped my sister out of my timeline. Prepare to die!)
  • Sasaki: No longer lives with her biological father.
  • Kyon and Haruhi: Have full sets of original parents. (Haruhi is an only child.)

BTW: Is Miss Asakura The Lost Lenore? Kyon keeps thinking about her, but to Taniguchi she's as forgotten as all the other aliens he's dated.
