All the problems you describe do happen with the native board, at least they do to mine (bought as a bundle with Wii Fit Plus). Calibration, positioning on the board and positioning of the board on a floor (not a carpet) contribute to solving most of those.
Videogames do not make you a worse person... Than you already are.

That all sounds like stuff I've had happen with the proper board, so I wouldn't be overly concerned.
That said, I personally tend not to get third party hardware in the first place. Less quality control.

Third party?

So after borrowing and trying a Wii balance board, I bought one. The board I got bears the logo of Big Ben Interactive, not Nintendo, and it comes with a led scale and butt-ugly foot position marks◊. I can't find any reviews or other discussion of this thing, and the company's Wikipedia page is horrible. I have no experience with third-party peripherals, so:
Do you think that this thing is a proper, full-fledged balance board that just needs to be painted white, or a shitty half-baked knock-off that I should toss in the trash and bid a new one off of eBay?
It syncs up all right. I seem to do as well as before in the minigames in Wii Fit +'s fitness test. The thing sometimes needs several tries to measure my balance and weight. Balance games work fine. In the obstacle course, my character would occasionally drop to a walking pace as I was running. (Does that happen with the real board?) Confirmation bias is too strong to let me draw any conclusions.
