I am rather disgusted by the thugs in the article, but the overreaction here is a little worrying. Not to mention the slippery slope arguments. Let's kill everybody who kills insects and spiders, soon they'll be moving up to rats and mice and then cats and dogs and people.

Let's not resort to slippery slope arguments here. There is much more sense behind this.

Think more clearly about the intent and circumstances. It was mindless violence, not just restricted to one animal but against several of them indiscriminate of species, simply because they were weak and unable to defend themselves - the perpetrators derived pleasure and enjoyment from a massive act of cruelty. Indeed, we ought to consider the psychological implications of this act. Is this the sort of thing that any reasonable, moral citizen would do?

How do you know they enjoyed it?

And I don't think killing any kid to torture an animal is the right way to run any society.

It's the sort of thing a child would do! Somebody who hasn't been taught better!

Locke must not be very popular around here...

No. But obviously simply not being a moral reasonable citizen isn't enough to qualify one for cruel and unusual punishment.

And how many people kill insects because it's easy and they derive satisfaction from it? Still a lot, I imagine. Frying ants is a national pastime, isn't it? I once killed insects for fun, and you don't see me torturing people.

I didn't even kill bugs for fun the other day, they were there, and I mushed some of those little red guys. Why?

Dunno.

Should we all be worried that I have a Swiss army knife and know how to drive to the zoo?

Edit: Sorry, Switzerland.

Joe: [THOUGHTCRIME DETECTED.]

Shichi: It's just that rather than see if there's other suitable punishments and rehabilitation methods which may work, you leap to the death sentence, which is the extreme end of the punishment scale. There are thing on that scale that may work just as well that aren't so extreme.

Do not construe that to mean that I think lightly of the crime, though.

Flashback to a story where a little girl and her friend encountered some aliens, and told them about how they liked destroying ants, and how she was queen of the world or something.

The aliens were apparently quite disturbed, though really, if they were so easily mislead, that itself would be an issue.

I can vouch for kids not knowing any better. I have a four-year-old; she can do some really zany stuff, and it's pulling teeth to get an answer out of her besids 'I dunno' when asked why she did something.

I certainly know kids who I wouldn't trust with a bird, and not just because I know they'd forget to feed it.

I've expirence as a Patrol Leader and as an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. Little boys torturing small animals they catch is not something I see frequently, but if I reported every instance for psychological evaluation, I'd have very quiet camp-outs.

Huh, maybe I should...

Most children and indeed adults are mildly cruel to small animals at some time. It's quite natural and understandable to squish spiders or stamp on ant hills. Yet it's wrong to enjoy it so much, to have such a sadistic contempt for animals that you'd break into a zoo and maim/torture/kill all the creatures there. We have to accept that it's not completely detached from average human behaviour, but it takes it to horrible extremes on the spectrum of animal cruelty.

[up][up] By the time they're twelve, they know better.

[up] Exactly. There's a difference between stomping on an anthill and killing hundreds of fish by dumping fertilizer into their pond. There's a difference between stomping on a spider and beheading eighteen birds. There's a difference between throwing a chair when you're angry, and causing hundreds of dollars worth of property damage.

Well, a couple of them are impaired in some way or another, but I usually don't catch them at it.

And for many children, 13 isn't as old as it seems.

I'm pretty sure that even an immature thirteen year old who is, personality-wise, younger than their actual age of thirteen, would be able to realize that beheading birds isn't right.

It doesn't take an adult to realize that poisoning a pond of fish, beheading several birds, crushing frogs, and vandalising another's property is beyond ****ed up...

That said, all the people accusing those wishing a harsh punishment on the yobs of being no better than them are quite worrying. Being content with just wanting to make them pay fines and community service is just disturbing.

Oh? So an Ethiopian boy who catches a bird for his amusement would have the same reservations my lot of suburban white boys does?

You only know that killing things is wrong if that's what you're taught.

I want to hear a hunter or somebody who has actually slaughtered an animal weigh in. Are they angry about more than just the waste and the senselessness?

The hunters I know actually eat the animals they kill so they fall into my group of "your killing is permissible" group...

Those who don't eat it or use the animal for something else other than enjoyment don't though...

Hunting might be fun. I would like to try it at least once. THAT THING. IT WILL BE MINE TO EAT. FOR I KILLED IT. JUST LIKE MY FISH. THOSE FISHY FUCKS WERE MY FOOD FOR I CAUGHT AND KILLED THEM.

So, has anyone actually been accused of trashing the place, yet, or are we supposing that they're only kids? Without any suspects, it's kind of a moot point to be discussing age and age-related morality issues.

Eating the fish you caught seems to bring about more satisfaction than buying it out in a store. Discounting the price of the gear used to catch it, it's cheaper.
