[up]How recent was that update? I never recall seeing it.

Like... a month ago or less. It introduced trophies too.

Seriously? Why did they wait for so long to do so? Trophies were already being put into games when MGS 4 came out, so why now?

Well, it wasn't mandatory to have trophies until later.

But that's the thing. MGS 4 has been out for several years already. A lot of older games aren't even bothering to update their stuff and the Metal Gear Online servers are dead, so what made them do it?

The HD colleciton came out and about a month ago is when people would've started to get to MGS 4. Plus kojima Productions has been busy between Revengeance and Ground Zeroes, so they just didn't have the time.

I'm surprised anyone here hasn't noticed the significant discrepancy in the trailer. The years doesn't really add up between Big Boss and Chico.

If the boy in the cell is indeed Chico and the scene took place short time after Peace Walker incident then how come Big Boss is so old? But if the scene happened long after the Peace Walker incident then how come Chico is still a kid? I doubt the Kojima team missed such important timeline detail and there must be some massive curveball hidden in the trailer.

[up] I could have told you that.

Link.

Snake only looked old in the trailer because of lighting. In normal gameplay, his hair is still brown.

Why does Snake wear goggles? He doesn't have a right eye. Wouldn't a monocle make more sense?

My guess would be they don't make quality night vision monocle in the 70s

Anyway I love how Miller said "due to the political nature of this mission, support is not feasible" then during the gameplay Snake summons a freaking chopper complete with its own BGM Ride of valkyries. Gameplay and Story Segregation much?

[up] Or, maybe the chopper option doesn't become available in-game until later, when the political situation relaxes.

It's just a trailer after all. Not even the beta stage of design.

I agree with you; there used to be times when "gameplay trailer" actually means a lot (showcasing your gameplay element, ingame graphics and physics etc) but nowadays its like just another trailer.

BTW I love how with Ground Zeros acting as MGS 5 "prequel" we're at least guaranteed two high quality Next Gen MGS games (I'll eat my pinkie if MGS 5 is released on PS Vita).

[up] ...Remember the MGS 2 trailer where several scenes used Snake where Raiden actually ended up in the final game?

Good times.

Oh, or the bit with the extended Tanker chapter.

I do think the gameplay trailer for Ground Zeroes uses the ingame physics, graphics and gameplay elements. But because something happens one way in the trailer doesn't mean it will happen exactly like that in game.

Snake probably will be able to call in Chopper strikes. Just not at first, when the situation is tense.

No actually I don't, haha. Back then I don't have internet (I grew up in Indonesia) so all I have is snippets of pictures from gaming magazine and I was really mortified as a 13 years old when I realized after 30 minutes of awesomesauce Tanker incident gameplay I'll be playing as a blond emo bishie through some of the most incoherent plot in gaming history.

Good times.

I'm too excited now from the Ground Zeros trailer, I can't help myself from WMG -ing. So say Ground Zeros is released in early'14, that means we'll probably have MGS 5 by late 2015 as one of the release title for PS 4. Better start saving money folks!

I'm playing through MGS 1 right now and I gotta know, is there any significance to Decoy Octopus's name? I get the "Decoy" part, but why Octopus? Everybody else's animal name makes some kind of sense to me except his.

Octopi can change the color and texture of their skin to hide in coral reefs. Most characters adept at hiding in plain sight are either called Octopus or Snake. Sometimes Snakes wear octopi.

Octopi are a common occurrence in life in japan so most people probably learn about that when they're young, so they wouldn't feel the need to explain it. But outside of it most people never learn much about them, rather we learn about Chameleons. 'Course, Chameleons change color based on mood, not camouflage. It's understandable not to realize it, I actually had to take a minute and realize why the Octopus name was important too.

One of the TV show things from MGS 4's opening bit actually talks about Octopi and their camouflage, so the explanation is there, if you happen to be on the right channel at the right time and paying attention.

Decoy Octopus is in MGS 1...

I'm sure someone explains it to you over the codec if you call enough, can't remember who though.

Man I loved the tv shows in MGS 4. I want to see more of what life in the MGS world is like under the influence of the patriots. That'd be really cool.

Wasn't really a fan of the TV intro in Metal Gear Solid 4. Felt like a Big-Lipped Alligator Moment, more so than usual for the series.

Also, several pages back it was discussed about Ground Zeroes not having a HUD, has this been confirmed? A lot of gameplay demos (especially early ones) tend to not include one, even if there is one for the actual game upon release.

No the hud is still there, but it only shows up when you're using a certain ability or item. For example ammo shows up when shooting, radar shows up when you select it, context-sensitive actions pop up when they can be done, etc. They were probably hiding it just to make the game look more cinematic.

Apropos of not much, if there are any active TVT editors in this thread, could y'all take a look at the various MG/MGS pages and fix them up?

When I was working on the rename of What Do You Mean, It's Not Awesome? to Mundane Made Awesome, I came across the pages for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and they were a mess, particularly in regards to Example Indentation and Conversation In The Main Page.

I fixed up MGS 2, but there may be more work to be done by someone who's familiar with the series (unlike me, who's never been particularly interested in it). I know there's more work needed for 3, but I was on a time crunch, and I suspect the other MG/MGS pages are in need of attention of their own.

I will gladly take a look at 3's page. I never actually read it out of fear for 4 spoilers.
