Whoops, my bad.

Still, this whole thing is weirding me out. Maybe Kojima is restructuring his team and naming it something different?

People are guessing Kojima Productions are getting integrated into the larger company. Wouldn't surprise me if the studio that's working on MGO suddenly is renamed Konami LA or something like that for example.

... If Kojima leaves Metal Gear I'm not going to tear up.

At this point it needs fresh blood.

Well then. Kojima and KojiPro has done pretty much all the promotional things up to this moment so it will be interesting to see how Konami will do without them.

(Reminder that Silent Hills is a partnership between Konami and Del Toro so that will still happen even if Kojima is gone but Kojima working with Del Toro was part of the reason I was looking forward to the game after playing the demo))

A power struggle huh?

Well, now all bets are off, I wonder if Konami was trying to dial down something in MGS 5 and Kojima was having none of that.

Well on the bright side, Kojima seems to finally be getting his wish of not having to make any more Metal Gear games. tongue

That and with Kojima seemingly getting good will from PC Fanboys I think he will be fine since Independent Studios have surged in recent years.

-fandom myopia mode-

Yeah well I'm a Castlevania fan! We've been SOL on consoles since Silent Hill was just learning how to render lighting!

Srsly tho it's been obvious for awhile now that Kojima needs some reigning in. Modern Konami is NOT the person to do it, mind.

why would konami want to tone down content in MGS 5? They make Silent Hill which was already edgier than Metal Gear anyway. Ground Zeroes has an absolutely HORRIFYING series of torture tapes which include the sounds of people being raped, horribly beaten, psychologically broken beyond repair, etc. what could kojima have thought to include that was so ridiculously grimdark that konami would tell him to turn it down?

Having the player personally recruit and/or murder child soldiers?

Mind you, I haven't played Ground Zeroes yet, since I'm waiting to do both it and Phantom Pain together (and, again, thanks for keeping this thread fairly spoiler-free until then), but that's like, my first guess.

that's pretty edgy but not that much worse imo than what happens in ground zeroes, which honestly has some of the most horrifying content i've seen in a videogame in a while.

[up] Which is exactly why I never plan on playing it.

Metal Gear has always been a serious but flashy series with a goofy streak to it, and Ground Zeroes going full grimdark shock value is bullshit that I feel no desire to experience. Phantom Pain doesn't look extraordinarily better.

So the TPP Collector's Edition is pretty much sold out everywhere, at least for PS 4. Which really fucking sucks for me, because I want it but never even had the option since don't know where I'm going to be living in September. sad

In perhaps 18 months or so, there'll almost certainly be a discount bundle with both halves of MGS5 in it. If it gets that hard to find a copy, that might be worth waiting for.

I sure said that!

Note that what Konami is doing(making it so everything is ruled from their HQ instead of letting directors make games on their own)is something only they and Nintendo are doing in Japan. Other big publishers like Sony, Square Enix and Namco do the more western thing of letting the directors make actual decisions without consulting the main office every second since doing otherwise would be killing new ideas. Kojima and KojiPro doesn't seem to be the only ones to take issues with Konami changing.

(As a sidenote: out of Konami's 10 games this year half of them are the console and PC versions of MGSV(PC, PS 3, PS 4, XB 360 and XB 1))

Edit: Konami is now seeking new staff for Metal Gear.

Aw goddammit, I know I said I wanted a new Metal Gear series, but not like this.

I have a feeling Rising 2 went down the drain as well.

I still doubt Kojima has left Konami, or that they'd let him. It's very clear Metal Gear is Konami's biggest property, and I'm not even sure I can name a success from Konami in the past decade that wasn't made by Koji Pro. Rather, I think Kojima himself is stepping back. It sounds like Kojima has had a lot of trouble trusting his team the last few yers with projects, partially out of perfectionism. I think with Metal Gear 'ending' he wants to let them prosper, so he's debranding himself to give them their own identity.

Either way, the alternative of a Metal Gear not made by Koji Pro isn't too promising, unless it's a series of Ac1ds and Risings.

If Konami is planning big things after Phantom Pain, why can't they make a deal with some animation company and make an Alternative Continuity of the games (sans the NES version of MG 1, Snake's Revenge, Acid, and Ghost Babel)?

this is why my feelings are kinda mixed on the matter.

on one hand, the edgy stuff isn't done too badly, and the tapes in particular actually do work at being really horrifying, so the execution was good.

on the other hand, does this really belong in metal gear? while MG could be dark it was always pretty campy and over-the-top.

Why is this suddenly too far but the elongated torture sequences in the previous games isn't? Metal Gear has always handled it's darker side with it's humorous side. The two are fairly separate so as to avoid mood whiplash. You're not goofing around during the dark segments of the story, you're usually too immersed to do it.

I don't mind Kojima ramping up the darker side this time, especially since I still manage to find people who genuinely believe that Big Boss and Ocelot are "the real heroes."

We've known for over two decades that Big Boss was heavily involved with child soldiers. we've known the he simply cannot function on a human level without some form of war. He dedicated an entire operation to the sole purpose of killing his son/brother/clone/whatever. We've known that Miller thought of Big Boss as a monster by the time of Zanzibar Land, and we've seen how close the two were.

This franchise has been going on for nearly three decades. God forbid it takes the time show the original villain as a fucking villain.
