Well Fin and Gill have known Maria since they were very young and it would seem strange if both their familes moved to the same town at the same time.

Anything that could trigger Finn and Gill's changes?

Puberty Superpower?

Okay, maybe not puberty in this case (you said they're about seven, right), but the point is that the changes could be triggered by them entering a new stage of physical development.

Then how did they survive in the ocean before their mum dumped on land?

[up] Well, one explanation you can use is that merfolk children typically can't survive in water at birth, and thus need a surrogate family until they change (in a sort of parallel to the "faerie children needing to feed on human milk" thing I mentioned earlier. Or amphibians, only in the reverse direction.)

That sounds cool, although it may be to close to an awful Disney Channel movie I once saw. Also any thoughts on a nightmare fuel ritual for Maria's change?

Maybe the adoptive parents aren't their aunt and uncle but a couple who came across the mermaid giving birth? Also maybe the "born unable to survive in water" could be because Fin and Gill's dad was a human.

Has anyone noticed in Changeling fantasies the adoptive parents, even when they know of their kid's heritage never try to prepare the kid?
