I hope that I did not just get myself into thread launching frenzy again...

I decided to have mages in my verse primarily use runic circle based on magic and...I have no damn idea how that supposed to work. So much that I don't even know where to look for information about it. This is driving me crazy what with my obssession with research and all, and I heard that Mahou Sensei Negima got it really well researched but since I have a NASTY tendency of Archive Binge, I shouldn't Tempt Fate. So where should I look for?

Another thing is, does anyone here know anything about Kabbalah? I find the Sephirot EXTREMELY fascinating and wants to research further in hope of getting some inspiration, and does anyone suppose if it's worth the trouble?

The Sephirotic Tree is fun, but mmmmaybe possibly somewhat overused. Check out the Lesser Key of Solomon (you can probably find it online), as I hear that has great references for hermetic magic circles of the nature you're referring to (and it's where FMA and Negima draw a fair bit of their inspiration for circle design as well)

The Runic alphabets are that way.

If you're researching Kabbalah, which is of Hebrew origin, the runic alphabets are not what you're looking for.

[up] Ok, what the fuck, there's variants? I mean, of course, there is, but goddamn it, that's a whole lot more of research for me to do.

You know, at this late, I might just end up doing all the research and never actually publishing my work...

Didn't I just say that the Runic alphabet has nothing to do with Kabbalah?

Of course there's variants, but it's easy to decide on which one to use depending on when the inscription is being written and in what language. You doing Proto-Norse, you use Elder Futhark. You doing Anglo-Saxon, you use the Anglo-Frisian Futhorc.

I know the futhorc by heart and most of the elder futhark, but I have made no attempt at learning the younger futhark, as there's too many inconsistencies and I personally dislike it.

Did you mean Hermetic Magic?

I also suggest looking up sigils, which are not runes but could be related to what you're looking for. Modern usage is different from traditional usage, apparently. I'm more familiar with the modern usage. Theme Park Version: You write some sort of symbol out of the letters of what you want to do and arrange it so it looks nice, then destroy it after you achieve gnosis. I'd link the Wikipedia article but then I'd need tinyurl for that. [lol]
