okay, maybe this is a bit of a stretch, but I was playing Soul Silver last night and in game I had chosen Cyndaquil as my starter. as such, my rival chose Totodile.

Now, remember in the beginning when you go back to Elm's lab and your character wonders where the 3rd pokemon (Chikorita, in my case) went? well, I went to Vermillion City and in one of the houses, there was a girl with a Bayleaf running around her.

my WMG? she was the one who Elm gave Chikorita to, though I'm not sure why.

AAH!! I've soiled my tunic!! ...completely by choice...

Let me check my Heart Gold...

...Nope, nothing changed. I chose Chikorita, and the girl still has a Bayleef. Would have been cool if true, though.

I'd like to know exactly where the Professors get the starter Pokemon, since they are unable to be caught in any reigion...

It brings up a lot of fridge logic. Once you get 1 starter and a ditto, you can make as many baby starters as you want. This has been possible since season 2. It's not like starters can't have eggs... so why would they be rare? It's probably so they seem "special" when you get your first Pokemon and don't just think "I could've just caught this later."

You see wild ones in Snap and the anime.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?

Reminds me of a video, I think at Dorkly.

Professor Oak uses Lethal Injection! It's super effective!

Bulbasar uses Growl! But it failed! Bulbasaur drools!

Professor Oak says "There, there."

Bulbasaur died!

The amine says that the starters are bred in special hidden areas to prevent Team Rocket from swiping them. Although I don't know why Team Rocket doesn't just start a Pokemon breeding business. It's a lot more economically efficient. Just find a kid, pay them to get a starter and give it to them for a while, breed two thousand more with the power of illogicality, and give the original back.
