Well, Cygan was wondering why there wasn't one, so I made it. I guess we can talk about queer stuff. :3

(*LGBTQ+ Solidarity huggles*)

Oh, and if you're wondering, non-queer folks are welcome too.

So my English class has to write an essay on an inspirational person, one of my classmates picked Caitlyn Jenner and the teacher gave her a disapproving look and now i'm sad because i didn't get to call the teacher a transphobic shitlord

To be fair, I would've disapproved of Jenner, too. She's arch-conservative (right down to opposing gay marriage) and elitist. None of my trans friends would call her a role model, and while it's not my place to partake in that judgement, I can easily see why.

Now, Laverne Cox on the other hand...

She's still a Republican. Even if it's just for their fiscal policy, that still is shit for other transgender people because of Republican views on socialized healthcare and interfering with the free market (I.e. they are Bad Thingsā„¢). She's a rich white woman who made her fortune pre-transition presenting as a rich white man.

oh wow, the seattle pi. been years since they've been in print (they're online only).

on makeup: go nuts. who cares what other people think?

on jenner: she just had an interview with ellen and it's.....yeah jenner kinda shot herself in the foot. I'm trying to find the article but it seems to be a bit hard to track down.

edit: found a quote by jenner from just the other day.

"I have to admit that I remember 15 years ago, 20 years ago, whenever it was that the whole gay marriage issue came up, at first, I was not for it. I mean, I thought, 'I'm a traditionalist,'" she said. "I'm older than most people in the audience. I mean, I kind of like tradition and it's always been a man and a woman. And I'm thinking, 'I don't quite get it.' But as time goes on, like a lot of people on this issue, I've really changed thinking here to 'I don't ever want to stand in front of anybody's happiness.' That's not my job. OK? If that word 'marriage' is really, really that important to you, I can go with it."

and

"For me I'm at such a different place in life. I already have too many children. Just kidding. Just kidding,"

the last one isn't relevant to the issue but this is the person who's probably going to become a public figure for the trans community, folks. meet you at the bar, guys.

Eh, we've also got Janet Mock, Laverne Cox, and Carmen Carerra, who are all pretty good role models. They've also shown they can take control of interviews that go into a transphobic direction.

I also know of a few nonbinary folk who, with more exposure, would be great at bringing acceptance of nonbinary identities.

No, Miley is not.

I've also recently been told that genderbending is transphobic, and I, as a trans person, must stop people from making genderbent art or comics.

No. Not gonna happen.

Yeah, I don't see "this character, but the other gender, still cis" as a transphobic thing. It's just a different way to look at the character, as long as it's not excluding transbends as well.

There are some cases, such as in El Goonish Shive, where it doesn't affect their gender.

does miley identify as nb? that statement (to me) makes it sound like that.

I heard somewhere that Miley does, but she's pretty awful.

Cool nonbinary folks, and what they do!

  • A Stiffler (and their cisgender wife, K Copeland). They make the webcomics Chaos Life and Find Chaos.

  • La Roux. Electronica artist (formerly a duo).

  • Kaitlyn Alexander. Actor on the webseries Carmilla, where they play a nonbinary character. Also writing and starring in another webseries, though I forget the name, and it hasn't begun airing yet.
