So in the end people are mad anyway. THE END.

All we need now is to tie people down and force-feed them tea, and it would be a classic Touhou ending!

My sense of humor isn't quite sadistic enough for that to register as remotely amusing.

But for that student, there was an expected benefit: Not having to hear, smile and nod to what he probably perceived as a very offensive lie.

He could have achieved much the same result with a lot less effort by going to the restroom at the given moment.

I don't know what you mean by misgynic. I'll venture to guess that you mean misogynistic, in which case I assure you that I don't hate women towards life.

I found a court ruling that kinda settles this. The video is for another story (anti-fox news) but the ruling would affect this case as well:

Fox News is one sided, inacurate, and a disgrace to the instituion of journalism in general and America in particular.

Nothing new.

Speaking as a Deist who's grown up in the South...

I side with the kid on this. If I had my way, everything that did not actually take place in a place of worship would be secular. Certainly anything that had any kind of government involvement certainly should be.

Let's flip the perspective here. Let's say there was just one Christian at a school full of atheists. If the principal or a teacher had given a graduation speech along the lines of "your success is due fully to your own efforts, no deity helped you all, after all they don't exist," that kid shouldn't have to put up with that.

As Descartes alledgedly said, "I might not agree with your beliefs but I'll defend to the death your right to speak them."

There are times and places for religion and theism and everything on that spectrum. But anything organized by the government should be agnostic, and not even mention it.

Well, if it's worded like that, that's "preaching" the "religion" of atheism and still wrong, but you kinda have to go out of your way to do that. If you left off the explicit "with no God to help you" and it was just "You all worked hard to get here, you should be proud of yourselves, etc, etc," it'd be fine.

That's my point. "You all worked hard" is secular and acceptable.

"With no God to help you" is atheist and not acceptable.

"With God's help" is theistic and not acceptable.

So very true. And this one would indeed be just as upset if the roles were reversed.

Yep. Course, even in that case, if the community as a whole is atheistic, it may not be worth it to say "Now hey wait a minute!"

As Descartes alledgedly said, "I might not agree with your beliefs but I'll defend to the death your right to speak them."

Descartes had nothing to do with the quote, that was Tallentyre describing Voltaire's attitude.
