Made because I couldn't find a thread for it.

So, you know how Rayman Origins was going to be an episodic series? Well, now it's a retail game. More details at Neogaf

Rayman Origins
  • - Ancel notes that he's been working on BG&E2 for "a while". He said they've had a little break from that project that that's where RO started
  • - He noted that few people finished the original Rayman due to its difficulty. They hope to change that by making this one more accessible while still offering a challenge
  • - They're trying to design the game to fit various platforming styles. So people that enjoy collecting will have plenty to collect but it's also being designed for those that like to do speedruns
  • - The Lums you collect will act as currency for new power ups, health and 'I Dare You' challenges.
  • - 'I Dare You' challenges are where you wager on whether you can complete a complex, acrobatic chain.
  • - The game now supports 4 player local (they don't say anything about online) co-op.
  • - "The levels are designed with both single-playing and multiplayer in mind, so no one is at a loss if a player tackles the game alone or in a group.
  • - Rayman, Globox and two teensies were the 4 characters used in the mutliplayer demo
  • - In order to keep the game accessible all characters will have the same abilities
  • - While the game was a downloable title it has since become a full retail title. Ancel said that comes from people wanting to make a real sequel
  • - It's due this holiday for the PS 3 and 360

So everyone clones of each other?

Laaaame...I'm kind of irritated that Ubisoft has been putting so much emphasis on accessibility lately. I believe it's starting to get in the way of challenge, depth, and sometimes even fun.

Boxart. Looks like this game's gonna be heavy on the Eldritch Abominations.

Yes it is... and the new Game Informer explains it.

  • The world is created through the dreams of a man known simply as the Bubble Dreamer, who also appears in the world when he dreams. Lately, though... he's been having nightmares.
  • Rayman was created by the nymphs to cheer the Bubble Dreamer up and stop the nightmares, and save the world.
  • The game will also explain multiple things, including Rayman's friendship with Globox, why Globox is blue instead of red (he's a Red Wizard, after all), and the origins of Electoons, Lums, and the original bad guy Mr. Dark.

We're finally getting closure on Mr. Dark?

And the Bubble Dreamer sounds like a word for word description of Polokus.

Wait, both the electoons AND lums are gonna be explained? So that means the first Rayman WASN'T retconed when Rayman 2 came out?! Yay! I was wodnering if this was going to be a full reboot, but it seems it'll rather fill the plotholes, nice!

Is there a trope for a series installment that fills in the gaps between other installments rather than starting from scratch?

The reaction to the original game stuff being explained/referenced is both awesome and hilarious. XD NOW I'm interested in the game.

Making the first game more accessible is a good move, too. Eat at Joe's, anyone?

Yeah, it's probably a good thing that it won't be controller-gnawingly hard this time.

Also interesting bit here. Remember the mosquito boss from 1?

He's your ally here.

He was your ally in that game too... or at least Mosquito becomes your ally in the gameboy game I played where he's an early boss.

There's a couple levels where you have to fly him through obstacles and stuff.

wild mass guessThere will be a Time Skip during the game. It begins before the start of Rayman1, and at some point the story jumps forward past 1, showing what happened between 1 and 2.wild mass guess

This game is a must-own for me. And my friends and I will have a jolly good time being huge dicks to one another in co-op.

But in particular, I'm actually really fascinated by the Ubiart tools they made just for this game. I've thought for a long time that "There should be a program that just distorts and animates stuff for you," and lo and behold, they made it! And I'm a sucker for hand-drawn art.

Regarding Mr. Dark: I have waited and wondered for sixteen years to find out what the hell his deal is. It had better be pretty fucking good.

[up] One day Mr. Dark decided to steal the Great Protoon, kidnap the Electoons which powered it, and defeat Betilla the Fairy when she went to protect it. As he was the cowardly sort, he used his minions to do his work for him, including an evil clone of Rayman and weird merged versions of the previous bosses.

And A Winner Is You.

[up]We all know that, but who is he? What does he look like under that cloak? Why did he want to de-harmonise the world in the first place? I sincerely hope Origins answers these questions.

I wonder if they'll do some sort of retcon of the final battle in Rayman, it just had an odd ending that didn't really give much closure, and it would be nice to actually fight Mr. Dark this time.

I've never played past the first game but I could guess that Polokus could be like a physical God/Guardian created by the Bubble Dreamer, he is dreaming after all, he might dream up an avatar of himself.

It sounds to me like the Bubble Dreamer is just an alias for Polokus. Polokus was stated to have created the world with his dreams, and this game must take place before his nightmares were sealed in the Cave of Bad Dreams. Maybe Rayman's quest will involve sealing the creatures created by Polokus's nightmares in the cave.
