A thread for CLANNAD. There is Key Visual Arts page in general in VN forum, but you all know how active that is unless it is a Type Moon or When They Cry series.

Anyone watched the series? I actually watched up to ep 14 of After Story because I heard that things go downhill from 16. If I watch that I might be too crushed to focus on real life so I'm waiting.

Who likes this series? I most certainly do.

I've a friend who never shuts up about it. Gets kinda annoying since he always links me to videos or gushes about how much he adores Kyou.

I'd rather Ryou, Ryou, Ryou my boat gently down the stream.

Might as well turn this into a Key-verse discussion page? Or just the big 3, since we have a thread for AB!

Wait a sec, ep 14, ep 14... isn't that the one with drunk!Nagisa?

Wait.

No no no that can't be right.

"Ratings go DOWN after Episode 14 of After-Story"!?!?

You should definitely continue! You will miss the best stuff.

^ He meant downhill as in... you know... stuff. But yeah, there are some moments that really prove to be the most heartwarming in all of anime in episodes 16-22.

I'm very slowly working my way through it now, although I'm already fully aware of the plot. It's really great, and there's a factor of nostalgia in it since I watched Clannad while it was still airing (i.e. a long time ago). Sunohara never fails to...well, be Sunohara.

The one thing the anime was missing was an 'After Story' for Kotomi. I want a Kotomi After story. Especially after how the movie treated her >.>

Regardless, still one of my favourite anime's ever.

The only reason to watch the movie is to see Sunohara's rapeface when they visit Nagisa at the family restaurant. Otherwise, don't bother.

I want a Kyou route. She had a bonus episode though.

Troper Roxas,

The one thing the anime was missing was an 'After Story' for Kotomi. I want a Kotomi After story. Especially after how the movie treated her >.>

Regardless, still one of my favourite anime's ever.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong about this, but I thought the reason why Tomoyo and Kyou had their alternate universe episodes was because their paths from the original game/visual novel were not covered very thoroughly in the main series. I think Kotomi's story was followed much more faithfully, even if its end result in the TV show was not actually a relationship.

I have not played the visual novel though so most of this information is second hand for me. Still, Kotomi is my favorite character so I definitely would not dislike having an 'After Story' for her too.

Kousaka Kirino,

The only reason to watch the movie is to see Sunohara's rapeface when they visit Nagisa at the family restaurant. Otherwise, don't bother.
Well, there is also the movie version of Dango Daikazoku too, but your mileage may vary on whether you like that type of thing.

This is correct. The Nagisa, Kyou and Tomoyo routes are by and large mutually exclusive, the conditions for one precludes the existence of the other two. Since the anime had to be the Nagisa route, Kyou and Tomoyo's stories were largely skipped. However the Fuuko and Kotomi routes slot in nicely with Nagisa's, so they were both covered essentially completely.

Ryou's "route" also got skipped, but its technically a bad end. She also gets a non-Tomoya love interest, who was dropped from the anime entirely.

From the game's perspective:

  • Kotomi's route is actually mutually exclusive with everyone else's. It's entirely possible to play the game up to After Story without ever meeting Kotomi. * Which is why it's crucial to make that choice on the first day to skip class to meet Kotomi to ensure a chance at having 100% attendance for Nagisa's graduation.
  • Ryou's route is identical to Kyou's route in terms of choices, until a branch in the middle. * She's kind of a bad end, which is why she was dropped from the anime, mostly. The OVA deals with the branch.
  • Fuuko's route... well, parts of it are needed in Nagisa's route IIRC, so it slots in nicely.

And yes, the anime needs to put Kappei in. Poor guy...

I just finished the anime on Saturday! Wow was it amazing, never have I cried so much on a show.

After Story killed me, it really did. I actually saw the movie before I saw the Anime, boy was that a mistake. Thankfully, I didn't know what happened in the end of After Story, it was such a surprise to me.

Yeah, after episode 14 you NEED to finish watching it, endure the sadness but those segments with Tomoya and well, Ushio were just the best in the series.

After I saw the very end of After Story, I didn't know how to talk. I must've sat there full of emotion for 15 minutes! It's a good thing they aired a filler episode and the Kyou route after the last episode proper, otherwise they'd have tons of anime viewers taking life counseling.

Ushio is the most precious thing ever. Does she realize how much she means to her papa?

Guess I'm the only one that's not a big after story fan. It felt a little cheap to throw in a reset button after all of Tomoya's character development. All of that was erased.

I didn't really like the reset thing too. That's probably it's biggest flaw. Like how Kanon magically fixed everything by the end, which felt like a bit of a cop-out.

But you can wild mass guess that the ending was a hypothetical ending of how it could've happened, but that would only depress you more. Or it could be a vision Tomoya has right before dying.

I wasn't too thrilled with After Story either, though I will admit it was very emotional.

Well the reason that part was done like that was because of how the VN's end works. I actually didn't mind it at all since the stuff with the light orbs and the illusionary world all fit in nicely.

Oh, and I saw thirty seconds of the movie and never touched it again.

Also, Kappei T_T.

The weirdness at the end of After Story is because CLANNAD is explicitly set in a multiverse, and its used as such in the story being told. This is much easier to do in a Visual Novel than in an anime.

Here is a timeline someone made for the anime, which may help to explain a few things.

Uh huh, but it's still a reset button ending that erases all of Tomoya's character development and turns a lot of After Story into a "Shaggy Dog" Story.

Excelion from The Fatherland Since: Sep, 2010

True, the ending could have been pulled off better. Doesn't metter if they have to diverge from the VN.

I personally liked the way the Reset Button happened, with the alternate world and everything, it just feels more like it's been built up from the very beginning, but in the end it's still a Reset Button that undoes most of what happened after a certain point... Including the character development.

It perhaps would have been better if Ushio just didn't die. It actually makes the whole scene in the sunflower field more meaningful. Basically, Tomoya would have a new light in his life besides Nagisa. Of course you can't have Ushio die since that would just be over the top depressing, given that there's no reset. So either make her not have Clann AIDS, or make her survive the Clann AIDS
