Outpost2

Has anyone else played this game? It is, in my opinion, one of the most well-made RTS games ever, despite being over a decade old, but I rarely meet anyone who has heard of it.

I have it at home.

Admittedly, I've never really played it much. I suppose I could always pick it up at some point.

All I seem to remember is that every level was a race against time to evacuate before a river of lava destroys your base or something.

One of my few regrets about being born female is the inability to grow a handlebar mustache. -Landstander

Either that, or a strike mission without where you attempt to capture various targets from the enemy colony. It alternates about 2 colony missions to 1 attack mission.

It is painful to play, and horribly designed at several points. Or maybe I'm just horrible at playing it. Be that as it may, I have to play the game at its slowest setting to keep all the balls in the air. And mission 2 on Hard was just an exercise in restarting over and over until I could figure out the optimal sequence of moves. Stalked by the Bell, indeed.

I'm still fond of it. The side story, the abundant fluff in the help file, the colony management and the persistence of techs and stats make it much more meaningful than the usual "Push button, receive tanks."

I still haven't played it past mission 8, though.

^I usually would play on half speed, but I'd drop it to the slowest one at the start and when I needed to do detailed managing of my colony. The key to surviving is to pay attention to your Savant assistant. Whenever she says an alert you can hit spacebar to jump to the location of that event, which allows you to keep your colony running fairly smoothly.

It's definitely not an easy game, but that's one thing I like about it. And yes, the backstory and fluff are excellent. Did you play as Plymouth or Eden?

The game's biggest flaw is the AI. All the missions just run on scripted events, so it doesn't respond well to the player's actions. That said, it's pretty good scripting for the most part. I think it would be very fun on multiplayer, but I've never tried it (and obviously the online server went down ages ago).
