This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

For an advocate of national self-determination, Farage sure does like to meddle with other countries' political affairs. I guess it's okay when Britain does it.

Farage is the kind of berk that follows money beyond all else. And, Putin is probably waving a lot of dosh in front of his nose.
Apparently some places down there still haven't been surveyed after the hurricane strike.
Telegraph article quoting words like "found wanting", "pathetic" and ""In Anguilla, Montserrat and the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and Turks and Caicos, our response still requires improvement and the arrival of HMS Ocean in two weeks’ time will be later than any of us would wish.
"Experts and many in the area have been critical of the overall level of relief currently on offer as well as the apparent lack of forward-thinking once the storm’s route to Florida became more than just a possibility.""

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI'm a little surprised not to be hearing a peep here about the latest iteration of the Brexit Bill, particularly the part that would allow May and the cabinet to rewrite (any?) existing legislation without going through Parliament.

That article is 6 months old? Anything more recent?

"You can reply to this Message!"I mostly know that it passed some key vote yesterday.
It passed the second reading, which I think means that Parliament allows "it to be discussed on the floor of the house".
For comparisons sake, it's the same logic behind McCain's vote to allow the ACA repeal bill to be discussed. It doesn't rule out parliament voting down the bill in its third reading. And judging by some of the comments made by MPs in last night's debate then there are going to have to be changes to the bill before it will pass.
And, that's before the Lords gets their chance to maul it.
The Mail is probably oiling its ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE stamp as we speak.
"Yup. That tasted purple."The particular bill was adjusted before it went to the reading because a number of politician felt that it would depower the parliament too much. I admit, I have no idea how it looks now...I was too busy laughing about Bo Jo suddenly realizing that the UK actually needs the EU for a proper defence strategy and Hammond blabbering on about looking at the border between Norway and Sweden for a solution for the Ireland problem. Not sure what he hopes to see there. It's a Schengen border, they have exactly the same agreement the UK didn't want to be part of even when it was still part of the EU, and while only Sweden is part of the EU, Norway is part of EFTA, meaning it follows all the rules of the EU, but without having actual say in them.
Norway is an EU member with an asterisk at this point.
Plus, even if the EU didn't exist, Norway and Sweden would still operate under Nordic Council (free movement of people and labor across the Nordic borders) rules.
The Irish have all the right in the world to tell the Brits to fuck off.

"Yup. That tasted purple."In short: "welcome back to 1972". (Reasons why we joined the EEC in the first place, you blithering Tory idiots.)
I swear; too many people bought into "Labour Isn't Working" to notice that most of the 80s uptick had little to do with Thatcher. Now we get to see: being in Europe was key.

It's called "congruence bias".
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanYeah but she's basically Jesus for the Conservatives these days. Suggesting she's not the greatest thing to ever happen to this country isn't really allowed.
"Yup. That tasted purple."IF you're a conservative. She's not well-liked down here in South Wales
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."And yet they fired her, didn't they?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. The Tory party have a proud tradition of backstabbing. Plus she was losing popularity, introducing a tax that causes riots will do that.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."They proclaim her Jesus, crucify her, and worship her tortured corpse, not necessarily in that order?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. They worshipped her while she did good (by their standards), dumped her once she became a potential liability, and remember the "good" she does, worship her for that and, in the case of Cameron and Osborne, try to finish off what she started.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."And ignore her extreme authoritarian streak when it comes to the police charging striking miners (and having the media reverse the footage) and ordering the criminal brutality known as the Battle of the Bean Field, every damn officer involved in that should be rounded up and charged with GBH and attempted murder at least
advancing the front into TV TropesCan we please not recreate the Nuremberg trials with mostly-retired police officers?
Avatar SourceThey took their numbers off and brutally assaulted people, don't see why they should not be prosecuted, even if justice took longer than it should....
advancing the front into TV TropesIt'll be hard to get anything to stick in court tbh.
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
It deserves it. [The criticism aimed at government over the shoddy handling of the hurricane preparedness and response in the Caribbean.]
