This thread exists to discuss British politics.

Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.

    Original OP
(I saw Allan mention the lack of one so I thought I'd make one.)

Recent political stuff:

  • The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
  • Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
  • The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

It's an interesting scenario, but I don't really see the point unless Labour completely splinter.

And it's Angus Robertson that leads the SNP in Westminster rather than Salmond. Not that Salmond acts like it.

The point is the same point that had them turning up early in the morning to bag all the best seats on the opposition benches. Political prickwaving.

Yeah, for all their moral grandstanding against Punch & Judy politics the SNP sure love to troll their opponents during awkward moments.

I don't think Bercow will agree to designate Robertson as the opposition leader given that they're less than a quarter the size of the Labour party in the Commons and have an abstentionist policy for the Lords.

I don't think I recall any mention of the unique and scary possible side effects of Brexit on Northern Ireland in this thread. Long story short, if we're not careful, a new period of the Troubles could begin.

Actually, the dependence of the Good Friday agreement on the EU membership and thus the risks Brexit creates for NI has been mentioned.

[up]The issues with both the Scottish remaining in the Union and the Good Friday agreement were raised by Remain. But, as I recall, the general response from Leave was "pish-posh: stop scaremongering — let's change the subject to immigration in the South East". tongue

No plans, folks... Remember that. <_<

Spain's PM just argued that Article 50 is all or nothing and that if the UK leaves then Scotland has to take the slow route back in.

This is uncharted territory, but it's an understandable stance for the state with the most separatist regions.

[up]Yet another box ticked as being actual fallout from the "scaremongering" "lies" peddled by Remain's "Project Fear", I see. -_-

Surprise, everybody. :/

So the Parliamentary LP and the grassroots members are having a big fight over corbyn.

One thing, when discussing the UK with a British friend of mine, he mentioned that he thought Blair had made the UK economy flourish. Is that even remotely true?

Blair presided over a boom and made it even bigger.

Anyone who knows anything about the economic cycle knows that you don't do this. Save during a boom so you can make the inevitable bust smaller. Not doing this in the aughts is why the last recession was so harsh.

In simpler terms, he made the economy thrive, but to do so he used the supplies that we should have kept in order to get us through the next recession. Short term and ultimately destructive.

It has been noted by journalists and documentary-makers that Gordon Brown said "We have brought an end to boom and bust economics." more than a hundred times during his various speeches as Chancellor of the Exchequer. It left New Labour with very little room to manoeuvre when disaster struck.

Those who said it were less wrong this time, because of aggressive action taken by central banks. The problem is that we haven't gotten past the politics of boom and bust cycles, and the inability of states to enact fiscal responses got us where we are.

Some posts ago it was noted that Lucy Powell MP (recently resigned as Shadow Secretary of State for Education) was hypocritical in her criticism of Jeremy Corbyn's electability given her own appalling record as Labour's campaign manager last year. I have done some digging and found some more evidence against her: http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/03138/CampaigningAgainst_3138005a.pdf
It seems she approved the memo given to Labour activists in 2014 (the one which was found by the Conservatives and brought up in PMQs by David Cameron to mercilessly beat Ed Miliband), whereby they were directed to "move the conversation on" - that is to say quickly change the subject and hope nobody notices - should concerns be raised about immigration. It seems she is also guilty of causing rifts in the parliamentary party.

Lucy Powell? Not exactly a name invoking good memories.
