This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

South Africa gave its up because the White government didn't want blacks to have nukes.
And MI 6/SIS is meant to be getting extra people, though it will probably take time to filter though.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranSo, we take the history of past wars by doing the exact same thing that led to those wars? If what you learn from war is how to cause MORE wars, you didn't really learn anything from war.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesNo, Ukraine gave them up because they couldn't physically maintain them. Those nukes were getting hella old, and relied on a support infrastructure that required the full industrial might of the USSR (good old Soviet centralisation strikes again). Giving up the bomb wasn't to their advantage, but they really did not have a choice in the matter.

What's precedent ever done for us?Oh true, Russia would have invaded and taken the nukes by force if it had to, and we'd have allowed it.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranMore or less, how much does one need to spend just to keep a nuke...?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesNot sure they would have even bothered after a couple of decades' worth of decay. Basically, Ukraine was the front line of the Soviet Union's nuclear arsenal, with a massive network of hardened missile batteries loaded up with their most powerful, expensive weapons. That's a toy that's fantastic for a superpower, but Ukraine alone just did not have the technological know-how or resources to keep it running. Plus, a decade or so of neglect before the fall of the Iron Curtain meant that all that huge, hideously expensive hardware was due for a major overhaul, which Ukraine was even less capable of handling on its own - by that point, it would have been a major economic challenge for the Union itself, which is why they hadn't done it. If Putin had decided to take Ukraine, its arsenal would have been nothing more than weird, historically-interesting Soviet-era ruins by the time he got to it.

What's precedent ever done for us?Sure but you can't leave shit like that unsecured, that's how a bunch of films start, with forgotten nukes in a long abandoned silo.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyranso... the Daily Heil is posting articles with derogatory, and I would say libellous, language without the permission of the subject... this hits quite close to home as she runs in the same convention/cosplay circles as me http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3340731/Woman-told-ugly-love-bares-facial-birthmark-candid-photos.html
advancing the front into TV Tropes"Candid" photos? is that SFW? :P
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clotheswell... by the Aryan standards of the Heil it's not :P but they have successfully pissed off a LOT of people with this, hits quite close to home

advancing the front into TV TropesNow I'm starting to think you're being deliberately obtuse.
To avoid derailing the thread, let us continue over here.
Locking you up on radar since '09Anyone care to summarise the Heil link for me? I refuse to go to their site out of principle.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI just braved its depths, and here are two pertinent quotations:
However, she said that one day - 'I don't even know why' - she decided that she wasn't prepared to mask her face any more, and says 'it's never bothered me since'.
Good on her, IMO.
Locking you up on radar since '09"THIS WOMAN IS UGLY BECAUSE SHE HAS A BIRTHMARK ON HER FACE! actually she is not as the article is plagiarised" had to disable a blocker to get to it
advancing the front into TV TropesBloody Heil.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyranpeople on the MCM page are encouraging her to pursue legal action against them for publishing it without her permission, or try and do something trough the IPCC
advancing the front into TV Tropesjust wondering if anyone can give me some good links to prove the Mail has fascist leanings (and not "hurrah for the balcshirts, it was almost a century ago), I'm currently in an argument about it on another site and could do with some help
advancing the front into TV TropesA good show of the kind of shit the Mail pedals is the Daily Mail Song.[1] It's probably not technically Fascist anymore, but the sentiment and racist authoritarianism combined with massive hypocrisy is happily on show.
Though most of Richard Littlejohn's stuff would probably count as at least fascist adjacent.

"Yup. That tasted purple."I think you're missing a "GAY EUROPEAN PEDO ... SENT BY BRUSSELS" in there.
I was searching for that myself. I did manage to find his Daily Mail Cancer Song though.[1]

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyrannot good enough, they want things that prove they support political violence and totalitarianism, otherwise it's just far, far, right, thanks for trying though

advancing the front into TV TropesTry digging up some stuff Littlejohn has written, he's normally pretty horrible and may well have at least one death on his hands.
Honestly though if they accept that the Mail is far fair right scum that quibbling over if it's technically Fascist or not is pointless.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyranit all came from an argument on if calling it the Daily Heil is Godwin's Law, I say it's fascist so it's not Godwin's, they say it's no so it is, THIS IS VERY SERIOUS STUFF!

So did South Africa. Along with other WMD's.
By the way, did MI 6 boost their numbers after the Paris attacks? Heard something like that.
