This thread exists to discuss British politics.
Political issues related to Northern Ireland and the Crown Dependencies (the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) are also considered on-topic here if there's no more appropriate OTC thread for them.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
As with other OTC threads, off-topic posts may be thumped or edited by the moderators.
- There is a dedicated thread to discuss LGBTQ+ rights in the United Kingdom. That doesn't mean it's always off-topic here, but unless something's directly linked to political events, that's probably a better thread for it.
- There's also a separate thread to talk about your favourite British Prime Ministers.
Recent political stuff:
- The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
- Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
- The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

Well, it's nice to know that half the qualifications I have aren't going to count in five years time.
"Yup. That tasted purple."@ Tam:
...you think Labour care either?
In the meantime:
- Complaints about doctors up 23% in year
- 'Dick Turpin' rail firms criticised by MP
- Police in Birmingham try crime prediction technology: Minority Report?

Keep Rolling OnShit qualifications get replaced by shit qualifications. Nobody notices.
...or cares!
Keep Rolling OnLater today a court is due to rule on whether anyone cares that some bird got them out on a balcony in France.
Can we have some real news?
...looks like here's some: Police officer dies during Dale Cregan arrest in Tameside
Keep Rolling OnOf course Labour don't care, greeny. I am not that naive to think that they do. But they have to have the ability to project a semblance of caring, or else they wouldn't be able to con folks into voting for them.
Hopefully Milliband Minor will meet with some sort of career-ending faux pas before the election campaign starts in earnest.
Every day, Westminster does more and more to make me feel happy that it's not in charge of these things up here.
Anyway, at the moment we're probably looking at another either another hung parliament or, if Nick Clegg is still leading the Liberal Democrats, a Labour minority as they gobble up ex-Lib Dem seats.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)Either a hung parliament or an overwhelming landslide majority for labour. (capitalizing that name makes me feel icky.)
Labour would be a shoe in if Milliband didn't have all the personality and spine of a soggy cardboard box.
A leader of the next generation he ain't.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)Then who should reform Education? Since Britain is falling down the International League Tables — Teachers? Pupils? A British-ised version of the Japanese Educational System?
Anyway, it's funny that some Americans call Britain "socialist" and look down on us...and on that subject, there's a word that goes around some parts of the right: LibLabCon*.

Keep Rolling OnIn fairness, holyrood is playing with a loaded deck. Issues that are political hot potatoes, like benefits say, simply don't get devolved. Thus the Scottish government can avoid taking the popularity hit that will come with doing anything at all with those issues.
It's even more loaded when you consider Scotland recieves a subsidy from Westminster.
Keep Rolling OnYeah, but every part of the UK that isn't the square mile gets subsidised by the square mile.
I read a BBC web article by an economist who said that you look at the people going "They take our oil" on one side and you take the people saying "Subsidised spongers" on the other (he put it in more polite terms) and then add up their issues, it breaks even. It's the only really stable position. The bookmark was on a different computer so I can't link it for you.
Various News Items:
- Racism in football still a significant problem, says report: As Football reflects working-class society, that means Racism, and more significantly, Homophobia is a problem there.
- Bristol Pound launched to keep trade in the city: It's not the first in Britain, either. Localism?
- Zero hours contracts for NHS staff explained: I don't work for the NHS, but I'm on a Zero-Hours Contract.
- Domestic abuse to include non-violent control
Localised monitory systems have a habit of popping up throughout British history since the Banks of England and Scotland were established (and global, for that matter). If I could be bothered I'd start racking my brains for a list... but'll cheat, and start walking the web, instead.
Dear Lord! I quit: I didn't know there were that many local systems currently in existence, let alone trying to find the historical ones! I'm swamped in sites! I'm just going to cheat and reference the usual, and run like a bunny: the Other Wiki.

I went to that article too!
Keep Rolling OnI notice that Gingey Bottles aren't on the list. This is unacceptable!
And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)Especially when the glass cheques from Barrs can be traded in for thirty whole pence. I supplemented my pocket money with those when I were but a lad, and I am pretty sure that at least the other Scots tropeys did exactly the same.
Bottle caps of Mellow Yellow... (South Africa-specific, '80s). Died a death, that drink did, but was still fun while it lasted. And, the stickers, cheap toys and colouring-in books were fun. OMG — they were also Pac-Man related items! I'd forgotten that...

Tory council set to defy relaxed planning rules: Richmond Council in Surrey, by the way.
Keep Rolling OnYeah, I bet CMD is having kittens that one of his local Tory councils is not going along with his, hehe, Grand Design.
You mean this?

I know. Shocker, innit? And, it's poor old GCS Es for the chop, and not a proper restructure from the bottom up and actually accommodating employers, but harking back to Grammar School days. Shockity-shock. I seriously don't get the siren call that O-levels seem to have. It's been more than 20 sodding years since they were top dog. If they were so good, then they shouldn't have been replaced, but it's a bit late to put the yolk back in the egg.
If B-Techs don't get a reshaping to fit this new system, and take in people who can't or don't want to go the more academic route with a lower rung of certification as an intro... what happens to them? Nothing?
I mean... some knacks you do need to learn using a modular system of evaluation. Just because they're knacks you can't really test with a year-end paper.
