What is this?

The TV Tropes Dwarf Fortress Succession Game.

What you need.

Copy of the current dwarf fortress. Download it from here

If you want you may use your own graphics pack of choice.

For help or questions you can either visit the Dwarf Fortress Thread Here on Tvtropes Tropes Thread, The Dwarf Fortress Wiki Magma Wiki, or the Dwarf fortress forums here. DF Forums.

Media fire for sharing files You can use any service you choose as long as it does not require anyone else to log in to download the save.

The goal of the Succession Game is to make it as successful as possible and hopefully have some "FUN" along the way.

Ideally each player will post a sort of journal for their turn of play to let us all know how they are doing. I recommend doing one every season or for unique events. You can change the format of the journals however you like.

Remember "FUN" the way it occurs naturally vs forced "Fun" is what we want so no messing it up because you think it is funny.

We will run the fort for as long as we can or until we are completely bored with it.

For transferring save files transfer Copy the region into your data/save folder. Make sure it is the same version as the current df version.

Rules

  1. No DFHack or other assorted cheat tools/utilities (df cleaner is ok for frame rate improvements)
  2. You can use whatever graphics pack you want. The preference is the graphics the game is packaged with.
  3. No Mods.
  4. A turn is 1-2 in game years you can end your turn early if you choose to. Just simply save the fort as it is. Please remember to pass along any information about what you were doing last before passing it along.
  5. Under certain circumstances a extension for more time on your turn can be given. Pm Tuefel Hunden IV for information and to see what can be done.
  6. No making the fort unable to be passed on. For example, no flooding with lava or water to make it useless, no filling the fort with cavern monsters etc. If your done with your turn simply save it and pass it on. Natural screw ups are fine just let the rest of us know what is going on.
  7. Label your switches. It can be funny to a point to not label them but remember no one else has a clue as to what the levers will do without a note.
  8. If the Map and or Fort is deliberately vandalized or harmed outside of natural threats and events like beasts, goblins, and war we will load up the previously played map and continue on.
  9. Remember to package the file as a compressed file type. .rar or .zip preferred 7 zip is also acceptable.
  10. "Save Scumming" (quitting the game via utility like task manager or end it all and reloading the last save)is permitted but please limit it to three scums max per turn.
  11. Rules are subject to change as the situation ditctates.

Ramul Rabin, 251 Future Site of Stukosken

We have been tasked by the Royal House or rather the stewards and council of our nation Stelidmosus to establish a new colony in the mountains. We are to establish a fort and hopefully expand our nations prowess into the mountains.

I volunteered for the effort and the Royal House has granted me an expedition of pioneers and supplies to start out. I have one year to get us established and hopefully begin trading.

When we arrived in the region which seems fairly wild. There was no sign of any other nearby civilization. I hope that it does not impede trading.

Strike the Earth!

The Beginning

I have set the various dwarves to work gathering food and wood from the landscape. While the other miners and I begin carving a fort entrance and main rooms out of the mountain side. The site over looks the river making accessing water from below to feed the fort a easy task. The next more difficult task will be to create indoor farms to ensure a steady food supply.

Summer time has come and passed without event of any note. Storage and workshop chambers have been dug and supplies have begun flowing into the fort. I have also commissioned some work shops so we can begin preparing for traders that shall eventually arrive. I am hoping to finish digging out a dormitory, additional work shop chamber, and dining hall before the first caravan arrives.

I will also strive to get a farm set up so we can have a steady supply of food. I know that sooner rather then later we will need to see to the security of the fort. I plan to at least put up some doors to seal the fort off when necessary.

10, Malachite 251
I have decided to start adding dates to my entries as it makes it easier to track when things happen. I am pleased that the various room excavations are going much better then I had hoped. The dormitory is already carved out and soon the last of the storage/work shop areas will be finished.

We will then dig towards a water source we spotted above ground to flood a chamber prepped for farming below. I can hardly wait as it will give the farmer something to do other then look bored.

If possible I will see to a basic defense such as a draw bridge over a moat or pit until a better defensive solution and arrangement can be made.

25th Malachite, 251
Some immigrants arrived. They bring a bee keeper/miner, fisher dwarf, and dwarf skilled in crossbow making.I plan to set them to work as soon as is possible. I am also ordering up some more work shops be built to accommodate their professions.
24th Galena, 251
We have completed the farm plot and are beginning to plant plump helmet crops. Soon I hope to have the booze flowing into barrels. Dwarves with drink are happy dwarves. I have noticed the local area has trees but not quite enough to my personal satisfaction. It would be all to easy to strip every tree and still need more wood.
12th Limestone, 251
Autumn has come and I have started on a project to ensure the fort is secure. Alcohol productions has just started up to fill the slowly emptying barrels in the fort. I have devised a three measure protection plan for the fort. Traps and other defenses can be added in later.

The first inner most measure is simply two doors that can secured hopefully to give defenders time to rally. The second measure is a modified drawbridge, that when withdrawn seals up the entrance to the fort proper. The third measure is retractable draw bridge over a currently open pit. I am hoping to later either deepen the pit or line it with deadly traps.

I should set our crafts dwarf to work on preparing items for trade. In my desire to get everything else ready I have neglected goods for trade. Hopefully this will not be a disastrous decision.

8th Sandstone, 251
Another wave of migrants has arrived. I have found jobs for two of them as a butcher and tanner respectively. The third migrant will be our dedicated hunter. I need to get him a weapon to hunt with and ammo as well.
20th Timber, 251
The seal bridge and the pit bridge are both completed. I have lined the entrance over the pit bridge with walls to keep enemies from bypassing the hazard. I have also installed levers to operate these bridges. Booze production is under way as the farm begins to produce crops of plump helmets.

I have also ordered more barrels to be made for the storage of booze and food stuffs. I have begun production of tables and chairs for the dining hall. I am sure the various members of the fort would like someplace other then the floor to sit and eat.

The first trade caravan from the homeland has arrived and we have some goods ready to trade. I have appointed a broker to bargain with them for supplies. I shall ask for more booze, iron, and coals to help get the metal industry I hope to help start. I may ask for various other materials as well.

In the mean time we bartered for mostly food, booze, and various seeds. I also obtained a copper crossbow for our hunter until we can procure or make one from Iron or Steel.

28th Moonstone, 251
Winter arrived earlier but we did not notice. The Local climate is warm enough that even the local stream is still steadily flowing. Hopefully this is the case for the entire winter. Being cautious I am ordering the creation a tunnel that will access water from the stream in a more secure manner. This will provide water to the fort hopefully at most times of the year.
Bugger the Date,252 Mid-Spring
I was busy ensuring the final touches on the fort, before my departure, were in place before I knew I was late in summoning my relief. I could have also chosen one from the current population. Never the less I was ready and the fort should hold out for a while. I believe I accomplished much. The next keeper of the fort should either arrive with the next wave of immigrants or be chosen by lot.
I included notes by each lever so go into note mode to read what the various levers do.

Fort Front First Bridge is over the currently 1 z level pit.

I will be looking forward to the results of this. I'd join in the "FUN" myself, but I'm still trying to learn the game.

I'm interested in joining. I want to ask: I need to install a second copy of the game correct? I currently am struggling with my fortress and so far as I know, you can only have one game at a time.

Roptar: Nope you just drop the region folder into data/save. If you have another folder in there that is the same region I would delete it. We are using the current version of dwarf fortress. It will not work with older versions.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as Driscoll. Much as I'd like to participate (I've been itching to RP for a while), I don't think I'm quite experienced enough at DF yet.

It should be passed around via media fire from the last person. Who all wants to play for sure? I don't particularly care about skill level too much. Remember there are links for help in the OP.

Oi check the player list I added folks to it. It should take a bit for it to come to various turns. If your going to be a long while starting your turn let us know so we can bump it to next person.

I must be hanging out on that other imageboard too much, because the first thing I wanted to respond with was "inb4 someone complains about mediafire."

Put me down as "not participating until further notice."

Done. Your listed as a pick up player for the time being.

Mediafire is easy to use and free and it works well enough.

I look forward to the other players journals/notes and tales of their exploits in running the fort.

I will dorf' various participants into the game. I already Dorfed myself in :P

I need an account for mediafire don't I? If that's the case, I'd rather not do it... partly because I don't really feel about trying to register an account for something I'll barely use...

Nope media fire does not require an account. I didn't sign up for one and I use it for the minecraft succession game.

Which is why the download links have a limited active time.

What's your stance on text-based role play, a' la Boatmurdered and so on? I mean, since you're given each dwarf's personality... I'm just wondering, since your turn seemed very brief and to the point - is that the standard?

Of course, it'd likely take longer between posts to come up with stuff and write it down (maybe incorporate a screencap or two), but they just make it more interesting for the reader, I think.

I'll be honest, I'm really considering being the sixth... I mean, I barely know how to work a military, but I haven't had the opportunity to do a good RP in a while.

Write it out however you please. I took one in game year which is what we aim for, for now. Mine was brief and more like journal/notation style from an overseer's view.
