My prom is this Friday! I'm so excited for it. :D I don't have a date for prom, either, but honestly, I don't mind, I'm going with a group of friends instead. To me, that's what prom is supposed to be about—having fun with your friends, taking pretty pictures with them and your teachers, etc. I personally think there's too much pressure to have a date and wear an expensive dress that you'll only wear once, and stuff like that. Oh, and I'm glad that we don't have prom king and queen here. I don't really see the use in that kind of thing, anyway. =\

"All pain is a punishment, and every punishment is inflicted for love as much as for justice." — Joseph De Maistre.I've never quite understood why it's referred to as "prom" rather than "the prom". As far as I can tell, it's an abbreviation of "promenade". Is it intended as a verb, as in, "I am going to promenade this evening," or a noun, as in, "I am going to the promenade this evening"?
Either way, my school's equivalent was our sixth form formal evening. I didn't go. Some people gave me a hard time and others seemed disappointed, but I don't believe I missed out on much. I stayed home to revise, which is much more important than drunken frivoloties.
I think people just call it "prom" because once people started calling it "the prom" they got lazy. Although I have heard some people calling it "the prom", I don't think it rolls off the tongue as well in a sentence.
My school doesn't have a prom.
"badass" doesn't anything in after used end fail be fine.Well, if somebody informed me, "I'm going to prom today," my initial reaction would be to assume that they haven't learned to speak very well.
Being a freshman, I was not allowed to go to prom unless a junior or senior took me. I have a best friend who happens to be a junior who was actually going to take me, but of course, she can't make up her mind on anything. (We've been planning to date for nearly a month, but.... )
Above all, always remember to stay positive.^^ Why? All it implies is that they grew up around people who said "prom" instead of "the prom" and are unaware of the origins of the word, which I only found out like six months ago. It's pretty excusable evolution of language.
^ She wouldn't even take you as a friend so you could go? Aww. I'm sorry

Mine is today! <3 It's a regular school day, but all the seniors are taking the day off to get ready for prom and go to pre-proms.
That's something I've always found bothersome about the whole thing. It wasn't enough for the rest of the year to have their formal; they had to have pre-formals and after-formals and monthly anniversaries for the formal, and in the middle of the exam period as well.
I often wonder, did these people understand why they were at school?
I don't have a sensible reason. I suppose it's a personal peculiarity of mine. For example, if we consider the equivalent they had in my school (the formal), I would say, "I'm going to the formal," rather than, "I'm going to formal."

^ But before and afterprom were really fun! Admittedly my school has never celebrated anniversaries of it and we had it on a saturday, but still.
Haha, angry nerd backlash over prom. And to think, it almost happened to me. Being too young to drink kind of killed the fun, as my date was older but I don't regret it.

^ Aww, sweetie, you gotta take your shoes off as soon as you get there! XD
Ugh, yes, the high heels... I had the shortest, chunkiest heels I could find and dancing in them still hurt.
But if you take them off they hurt twice as much when you put them back on...
Be not afraid...In retrospect, I probably should have done that...
Yeah. DX
I didn't go to my prom. Though I went to my post-prom. I won a coffeemaker and it was also the longest I've ever been awake. I was up till 6 in the morning.
My prom is tomorrow. I can't even begin to tell you how pumped I am- I tried to plan out every last detail and it's paying off. Today is nails and tomorrow is hair and makeup...
I only semi-regret not going to my prom. I like dressing up, but I hate crowds, I barely hung out with most of the people I went to school with, and generally I hate the music they play at school dances. I went to afterprom my Junior Year though, the food was actually pretty good and it was pretty fun until everyone was forced in the gym for almost two hours to watch some lame magic trick (you literally were locked in and could not leave until afterprom was officially delcared over).
My PM box is always open to anyone who wants to talk/vent.It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
First time going was probably one of the highlights of my high school life. Then the next one was one of the biggest "I should have just stayed home" moments. But in both cases, it was less about the prom and more about a silly high school crush.
This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...I managed to get through school without ever figuring out whether or not we had a prom.
Did your school not have morning announcements? I drowned out almost everything at school and still managed to hear about prom tickets on the announcements every morning.
My PM box is always open to anyone who wants to talk/vent.I went to my senior prom with my then-boyfriend (back when I still thought I liked guys) last year. We had a nice Italian dinner beforehand and we dressed beautifully, but prom itself wasn't great. The music was HORRIBLE, and I'm prone to panic attacks in loud, crowded places, so we wound up leaving early. I had actually thrown up, I was that anxious.
Long story short, prom is apparently not for kids with social anxiety issues. :P
@Giggles: Your school had an official "after prom"? In my area, any time after prom is known for being when people have Their First Time. Anyway, ours is next week. It should be pretty decent, it's at a famous theatre in Atlanta. Last year it was at the aquarium, which I heard was awesome.
From what I heard from my friends that went, our prom was held in a smelly National Guard armory, the food was awful, the music was worse, and they wished they saved $100 and went to the Smash Bros. party
