It's really not that Metroidy at all. Not sure why the OP bothered making the comparison, really. Terraria draws inspiration from a number of other games... but if I had to describe it in an X Meets Y sort of way, I'd call it "Minecraft meets Spelunky," personally. With a good amount of RPG elements thrown in as well.
As a player progresses in the game, they find accessories, armor, and weaponry that allows them to explore more easily, which in turn allows them to explore areas that were previous inaccessable to them.
Sounds pretty Metroidvania-ish to me.
...hmm, that's true.
I woudn't really compare it specifically to Metroid, though, if that's what you're getting at.
Basically, think of not only the Metroid games, but the Castlevania games post Symphony of the Night. It's not drawing any of the scenery or anything like that (unless you count the dungeon on one end of the map, that's pretty Castlevania-y) but it is drawing the "exploration through upgrades" factor, is all.
Also, the Terraria page has a YMMV page now! :D

That's probably a more apt comparison. I just wasn't thinking Metroid at all because it's more of a fantasy setting than a sci-fi one. Although I guess there is like a laser gun and stuff.
This looks like my kind of game. I liked the mechanics of Minecraft, but it was just so boring and had a huge lack of content. You could get a diamond pick within one hour of starting up a new world, and the only thing that pick would open up is the rather boring nether. I mean seriously, two new mobs and three new block types? What a letdown.
This game has less of a building aspect, but that's not much of a loss to me. If you want to construct the kind of things that make Minecraft famous, you'll have to spend many hours building something excessively huge which will only look good at a distance, and in the end you can't really do anything with it.
The only things I enjoyed about Minecraft were the block physics and spelunking, and Terraria has both of those to a much more enjoyable degree than Minecraft.
Plus, Terraria seems much more geared to multiplayer, whereas Minecraft's multiplayer, which is actually pretty fun, is a total mess. Yes, it's a beta, but it doesn't show many signs of improving.
Leave your dignity at the door.I'd like to point out that the version being release on Monday is, in fact, the full release.
Considering Redigit started the project back in January, that says a lot.
Of course, Blue has stated that there will still be stuff added into the game through the foreseeable future, so yeah.
Something I WILL say is that people often defend Minecraft for being a beta, but it's more expensive than Terraria is supposed to be, and Terraria is a full, almost bug-free game.
Leave your dignity at the door.So late to the thread, I'm pretty sure I didn't see it mentioned.
However I'm, gonna be careful, does it need anything fancy to run?

Then I am so getting this, and would like to join the obvious troper army/server that will emerge.

Leave your dignity at the door. Are there any hard limits on number of players on the server at any one time?

Who watches the watchmen?Apparently it's just "As many as your server can handle".
I think Redigit mentioned it being limited to 255 players at the time he and Blue were doing the Let's Play. I think they may have toned it down since then, though.
I may have to wait for Tuesday to roll around or Wednesday. I have to wait for paypal to finish processing the money transfer.
Who watches the watchmen?I have a little bit of spare cash sitting in the bank specifically so I can buy this the day it comes out.
I've already floated the cash to my mom so I can get it since my debit card isn't here yet.
It should be noted Terraria is also 2D and less complicated in it's coding by comparison then minecraft. We also don't know if it is bug free. I highly doubt bug free there will always some bug or other that is a bit pesky to squash. But it is likely to be reasonably polished release with more content waiting in the wings.
There is one thing that bugs me though. Are we guaranteed future content if we buy it now or do we have pay for it later?

Who watches the watchmen? We are guaranteed all future updates for free.
Also, already working on the schematics for my home. :P
Yeah, Redigit and Blue have made it super clear that they don't intend to make us pay for DLC.
I'm going to have to start working on the blueprints for Boletarian Palace, because I'm eventually going to make that happen.
I will be getting this on monday, it'll give me something to focus on after having a wisdom tooth ripped out.
By the powers invested in me by tabloid-reading imbeciles, I pronounce you guilty of paedophilia!Anyone see any ads for it on Steam?
Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryYou probably won't see anything on Steam about it until tomorrow.
Metroid and Minecraft in one game?
I Dislike one, and I like the other...
Um... Well... What should I do? Notice that I DO like adventure games and such, but I just dont like Metroid.
