^^ hmm...that's a reasonably good explanation. Or the only explanation...

^ tbh, we don't know any numbers. There might be more and there might be less than predicted. And chances are, there are still a certain # out there considering some have been transferred around to protect them.

But that has no bearing on the question anyways.

Maybe it is just that young boys are more accessible in Catholic Churches than girls? Although girls can be altar servers and such, they are much more rare. So boys would be more likely to help with services, meaning they would spend more time alone with the priest...

Does that make sense?

Another factor might be that the heterosexual priests who are willing to violate their vows of celibacy are more likely to be getting it on with adult women who come to them.

^^ Probably not. Most men who molest boys otherwise identify as heterosexual.

About this:

Forgive me for not understanding the concept of christian hell too much...

But aren't there multiple levels of hell? And the worse your sin, the worse your hell would be?

If I am not mistaken, we just don't know. Apart from "hell is very bad/heaven is very good", there is not very much that is certain about the nature of afterlife.

As for the main topic of this thread: the vast majority of these sexual abuses involved post-pubescent boys. Strictly speaking, these priests were ephebophiles, not pedophiles - not that this justifies their actions in the least, of course.

While I do not approve of "it's gays' fault" nonsense, in this case I think that many of these priest were actually severely repressed gay people. I mean, religious careers are one of the few life choices which a gay Catholic could take without drawing criticism, and it is an open secret that a good number of seminarians and priests have homosexual tendencies (not all of them, of course, nor most; but many).

Most of them either drop off or become perfectly good priests; but I can see how a sexually confused, repressed person with no vocation to chastity might end up committing these kind of abuses. This does not justify them, of course; but looking at things from their point of view, it's kind of tragic.

The answer of the Church to this issue - ban gay people from becoming priests - is entirely the wrong one, I think, and also completely unenforceable; but it's not my place to decide...

Dante is not canon. His incorporation of Greek infernal rivers' names into his hell should tip one off tongue

So Dante wrote a fanfic that turned out to be more interesting than the original story? Well...it's not exactly that hard to beat something like the bible, but still, impressive.

Too bad there aren't any Sexy Nuns, a lot of problem with these priests have can be solved if they weren't forbidden from screwing women.

That would leave out the gay priests...let them get it on with other men then, just not when he's wearing his robe while in his church.

No need to hide the fact that they have sexual relationships, no need to have sex with people they know will keep their mouths shut.

If priests only abuse kids because of being celibate, what excuse do all the other child molesters have?

Well, seeing how priests are about equally as likely to molest people as regular joes by the numbers, I'm led to think the problem isn't celibacy. Though I wouldn't mind seeing that done away with for other reasons.

I'm pretty sure there are plenty of issues going on there beyond the need for sex. After all, there are lots of people who can't get sex in our society for one reason or another, and only a very small percentage molest children.

Be not afraid...

The Bible is the most influential book ever written on this planet. You may want to choose your words more carefully.

How hard can it be to have sex? Just get a girl, get close to her, and eventually she'll let you put the most digusting part of your body into the most disgusting part of her body...

I'm pretty sure there are plenty of issues going on there beyond the need for sex.

I'm honestly curious about this...in prison, prison rape is about...showing that guy you are above him by sticking up his butt.

But in this non-prison situation? The priest already has more power than the kids. He knows it, the kid knows it. So it's not about power either.

^^ Also, it is a collection of texts written by many different (human, I mean, leaving the issue of divine inspiration alone) authors, living centuries of years apart one from the others.

Literary quality varies, a lot. Some books of the Bible are unbearably dull, but I challenge anyone to read, say, the book of Job or the Ecclesiastes and not recognize that these are works of art of the highest level.

I don't know what else is causing it, because I'm not in their heads and I don't know what they think or feel.

But seriously. You can't claim that having no society-approved access to sex automatically causes people to become child molesters. People have morals, you know.
