I'm not actually American nor do I live in America but like America, my country was born from a revolution, several actually. But unlike America, we kinda lost so we had to keep fighting until foreigners rescued us. Anyway, because of this, even if I'm American, I will stand by my country to the death. I'm not sure about you guys, but I'm quite patriotic *

so there is still no way I'll leave this country. Unless... my killer is a total jerkass who keeps me alive then dumps me in another country and then kills me there or worse, freezes me alive so I can see the shit that will befall my country. Damn, I hope that doesn't happen. Anyway, I'm actually quite young so I'm unsure if my confidence will remain in the future but right now, screw pessimism. "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our... FREEDOM!"

I thought that if the dollar gets too worthless and the country is about to be bought out by China I'd move to England. Hopefully I can see it coming before the exchange rate gets really bad. I'd like to move to somewhere like France or Germany, but I can't learn another language to save my life.

It'd take another civil war for me to leave. And since we're not on the verge of that, my wife and I would probably have a kid by then. So we'll be 3+ out of millions of refugees. Doesn't sound very pleasant. I'd say we'd try to go to Canada, but I doubt it'd matter where we went because anywhere would be flooded with American refugess at that point. I would also take issue with the notion of calling those who run in that situation cowardly; I'd just assume those staying behind and fighting have nothing to lose. I care about my loved ones more than my country. *shrugs*

Realistically, I'd just get a group of like-minded fellows and try to start a peaceful town somewhere, and devote the rest of my life to shielding my community from all the bullshit that would ensue.

A lot of folks are talking about how good the rich would have it, but frankly if our money isn't worth its weight in tinder, they're just as bad off as regular folks. Even worse off than some regular folks who are prepared or in good geographical locations or with good skills to survive.

^Looking back on the hyperinflation in Weimar Germany, the rich and poor were the least hit, because the poorest didn't have much money to lose anyway, and the rich had physical assets such as houses and land. It was the middle classes who took the worst of currency devaluation.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

But in the event of a Government collapse, the ownership of property doesn't have much meaning unless it's insured with force of arms.

Any rich person can afford to buy some firearms, or to have stuff that buys people with firearms.

^^That is very true. I thought you were referring to a currency collapse, not a descent into anarchy.

^Its still you against a hell of a lot of people wanting your stuff. And you can't buy mercs if your paper isn't worth a dime from prior to the collapse.

If that happened anywhere, its not the kind of place you'd want to be.

To those that would bail to the UK, remember to leave your guns and fundamentalism at the door, but do enjoy your complimentary bags of irony and self deprecation. ;)

Things that would make me bail from the UK:

  • American style gun laws.
  • The dismantling of the NHS/Welfare state.
  • Being offered a better paying job in Europe.

By the powers invested in me by tabloid-reading imbeciles, I pronounce you guilty of paedophilia!

I said stuff, not money for a reason. The implication is you use your money before the fall to acquire some tangible assets.

^^

I don't see why gun laws would make you bail. Then again that particular issue is why I would never bail to the UK, even though I'm rabidly anti-fundamentalism.

Some rich folks would have lots of property to barter with, and that would be a great advantage. But many would not, depending on what they did and what they bought. A sports car isn't really worth dick in that environment because it sucks up too much gas. SUV's and vans for offroading ability and storage respectively, trucks too. Cars with good gas mileage, particularly Sedans, would also be valuable.

It varies a lot I guess. The first thing you do when this sort of thing happens is go out and get yourself a posse of friends so instead of bartering alone, it's you and a bunch of guys bartering your valuable stuff. If some rich guy has a huge ass armory of guns and valuable supplies, he's still just one man that has to sleep sometime. A band of guys with weapons and not a whole lot of stuff worth bartering aren't going to be terribly fair to one lone guy with a load of stuff.

In other words, teamwork is necessary. You have lots more mobility and not having to worry about arguments over decisions when you're alone, but when confronted with a dangerous situation or any sort of dealings with a semi-organized group of people, you're kind of fucked.

That's why the smart rich guys have friends and family.

Admittedly not a given, but what is?

I could see myself aligning with a rich dude in that sort of event where the states went to hell and people started to bail. He's got supplies, I've got training and knowledge, so that sounds like a pretty good symbiotic relationship there. Gear changes hands, training and skills are an invaluable commodity in that situation. They are what make you valuable as a person to have in a group, and not someone you just kill and steal their gear from.

I'd make a thread about this specific branchoff of this topic, but I'm not quite sure how I'd format the title and OP.
