Discar is right. I don't really care about Shonen Demographic or whatever title is added behind the word but the inability to pothole Shōnen (Shonen) is silly and harmful to the wiki.

Not to further belabor the Shonen issue to the exclusion of all others, but another issue with "Shonen Series" is this wiki's tendency for "Series" to mean "Live Action TV Series".

You don't always need to have the trope name be Exactly What It Says on the Tin. But if you've got a clue on there, that's enough. Sure, you still need to read the page to know what a Shonen Series is. But at least you know just from a glance roughly what it's trying to describe.

Besides, by the argument of needing to read the page, "Shonen" by itself is even worse because it has no meaning unless you're familiar with the anime and manga fandom. At least "Shonen Series" gives some clue to those not familiar with it, and its usage would mirror usage patterns on the wiki.

And by the way, related to your comment about who makes it so that we're "supposed" to use only the Japanese... Well, the Japanese people using it are using it in Japanese, so that's a circular argument, and looking over at the pros releasing stuff (Viz, Funimation, Seven Seas, etc.), I can't find any of them using the term at all in the context you're suggesting (only Viz comes close with Shonen Jump, Shonen Sunday, and Shojo Beat, which are just the names of the magazines that originally published the works in question). So honestly, it sounds more like Gratuitous Japanese on the part of the fandom than industry terminology.

@727 As a counter to that argument, I present the following:

• The Abridged Series
• Widget Series
• Series Mascot
• Gag Series
• Orphaned Series
• Gateway Series
• In-Series Nickname

There is plenty of healthy usage of the word "series" in this wiki that doesn't indicate anything about live action television.

That said, the point about one-shots is a valid one; that's why I think I suggested X Anime and Manga first.

I'm getting lost with all the threads on this one topic.

Where should we discuss this:

Let's try for a compromise. Let's make it so anime slang can be used, but only in an anime context. That means in the section of an examples list devoted to anime, or in an article describing the slang, and only for things that are purely anime.

Meaning that we don't have to learn what baka means to understand a trope used in general science fiction, for example.

How's that sound?

I think we're having a disagreement on what constitutes understanding. Knowing something's targeted towards someone, or a particular type of series, without knowing what that is strikes me as worthless. Everything has a target audience, everything can be classified somehow—there's no new information being conveyed without reading the page anyway, therefore the English serves no purpose.

It's been said before—though I can't remember by who, probably several people—that some translated manga have shounen on them amongst a list of genres. Strictly accurate and rather misleading but it's still use of the term.

Given that shonen, seinen, shoujo, and such are all exclusively anime and manga related, does that mean we can stop trying to rename them. =/
