That's what I do too. I juggle projects constantly, concentrating on one for a short period of time and when I feel like it's becoming too much work I just change to another one.

One of my characters, having gone through lots of shit and taken physical and psychological damage, grows to loathe the use of "that which doesn't kill me only makes me stronger" as a trite "buck up" sort of line. ("Really? How is PTSD supposed to make me stronger?") During some down time today, I idly Googled the phrase and found one that pretty succinctly sums up his view of the subject — from Marylin Manson, of all people: "Whatever doesn't kill you is gonna leave a scar."

[up] It usually does. Mental or physical, even if it doesn't, or never even threatens (but it's enough to leave an effect) to kill you, there's usually something that occurs that's gonna f**k you up for a long time. Speaking from my own experiences.

One thing I'd like to see more is protagonists who are genuinely ugly.

[up] What kind of ugly are we talking here? That's a broad descriptor.

Things like messy hair, bad teeth, being overweight, stuff along that line.

I can get behind that. More ugly protagonists are always fun.

...I mean in my current project my protagonist is kind of veeeeeery Bishonen but nevertheless.

I mean there is that contradiction of hollywood ugly and ugly ugly. Hollywood ugly tends to not be that ugly. My boyfriend has bad teeth, and is overweight. Is he ugly? No.

I would say in this context we'd be referring to Hollywood ugly? But yeah I see your point actually. It's an odd distinction but an important one.

Slendy: Especially since we are inclined to finding people more attractive if they have some sort of oddity or imperfection to them. Symmetricalness is usually just offputting.

Somebody appears to have searched for "Mary Sue" and posted the same two-line post in each of the threads with that title.

I suppose one might suggest the positive result that at least they're rather less likely now to be dredged up one at a time over a period of years; this way they're all up and locked at once.

I've realized that I have an odd preference for writing pathetic characters, especially female ones.

So my current list of minor characters and what their own scenes reveal.

Phansekar gets invalided after blowing a landing from her third combat action in her new service; she had a flashback to coming in from a landing after the Libra attack with her arm broken.

Searcy was a Combat SAR shuttle pilot before he went to mobile suits, because in his words he "Wanted to be allowed to shoot back." He still can't handle his MS on the ground very well but is the unit's best at precision delivery of unguided weapons.

Rodgers was busted from Lieutenant to Flight Officer in his previous service for being extraordinarily unpolitic regarding the likely outcome of a senior officer's plans; he also happened to be right. He has never managed to quite shake the stigma of speaking truth to power.

Deng was originally a marine mobile suit ace, before being conscripted to the space arm for the attack on Libra, and never went back. The presence of the three Cancer and two Pisces silhouettes on his suit tends to confuse people who've not read his file.

Arguello is known as the unit crazy because he's woken up screaming a couple of times from Libra-related nightmares, but continues to pass his psych evals and has shown no other behavior to warrant the reputation. As most of the squadron's pilots have similar nightmares, though few will admit it, they tend to close ranks against anyone who comments.

Buthelezi and his wing are both rare ex-White Fang pilots in a crowd of people who fought on the other side of the Eve Wars, which sometimes causes friction; he tends not to talk much because of it, despite being a section lead.

Yin is the shortest member of the squadron at 5'6” and is frequently compared to a bulldog by the others; small, but not given to retreat or surrender. She talks more than her section lead by at least an order of magnitude and has a reputation for being a woman of...commendable vigor.

Li has anger issues she expresses primarily via her love of martial arts and is the squadron's unarmed combat champ despite her relatively slight build. Most of the squadron enlisted to be pilots of some sort; Li enlisted intending to make a career as non-commissioned infantry but her aptitude tests sent her to Zero-Gee Flight Basic and from there to Zero-Gee Mobile Suit.

Konev is the oldest pilot in the squadron at just under 40, and is old enough to remember that his unit was actually transitioning from close-support aircraft to Aries mobile suits when he joined it.
