It's only found in 12 articles, and has only brought 24 people to the wiki.

That said, it also needs a better description. It seems from the examples and the Hellish Copter that it's about any aerial vehicle that's shot down on camera, but the description implies it's only for when the hero shoots down a villain making an aerial escape.

It wouldn't bug me so much that it has a Trope Namer, even such an obscure one, if the trope were actually about helicopters.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

I think it needs a better description as well.

Never even heard of this one. Rename and rewrite then.. Short Lived Aerial Escape? The page examples are fairly muddled also. This is the trope where a villain escapes by air, and then the hero destroys the vehicle. It's specific- the current examples seem to range more towards, "There was a helicopter, and then it exploded." A number aren't villain specific.

Examples I felt were bad:

  • Sharks of Deep Blue Sea manage to take out one in such fashion during their big escape plan.
  • True Lies: Two words - "You're fired."
  • Star Wars The Phantom Menace: During the scene where the Naboo pilots Gundam Jack their fighters away from Trade Federation droids that had secured the hanger, a turret out side the hanger manages to hit one of the fighters on take off, causing it to crash into a nearby mountain side.
  • Green Zone: Al Rawi's men shoot down a US Delta Force helicopter with an RPG.
  • Matthew Reilly's Temple has a giant demonic cat jump 10 feet straight up into a helicopter taking off. It explodes, but not before firing missiles into a seaplane and a couple of buildings; taking out some mooks, two more helicopters and almost totaling the heroes' Humvee with it's machine gun; and crashing into the helicopter taking off next to it.
  • At least twice in Modern Warfare 2. First, in the climax of "Of Their Own Accord", Hunter 2-1's Blackhawk and a SEAL team's Little Bird get attacked by an anti-aircraft missile battery soon after being evacuated from a rooftop. They combine this with Taking You With Me by opening fire on the missile batteries even as their chopper falls from the air.

There is now a single proposition rename crowner for this trope here.

I think that the helicopter part of the name is causing some misuse as Zikiel mentioned so I support a rename based off of that. The character name is another reason I can see for renaming this trope.

I apologize for double-posting, but I did not want this thread to be forgotten. Given the overwhelming support for a rename, there is now an alternative titles crowner for this trope here. Feel free to add names as you see fit.

Crowner has had well over a month, 8 to 0 in favor of Short-Lived Aerial Escape, 1 to 4 against Villain Getaway Aircraft Takeout

Not all that many votes, but it looks like we have a winner.

EDIT :

Page moved. All wicks moved. Sub-pages are all blank. Old name is redirect. This is done.

Skipped a couple of steps: needs a note in Renamed Tropes and the thread. The page type needs to be set, too.
