Character archetype, not writing guide (New crowner 9th Dec): So You Want To Live Forever

So You Want to Live Forever is a character who wants to live forever. But we have a whole index of "So You Want To" tropes, where you is the writer. Shouldn't it be renamed something like Immortality Seeker?

I'm bringing it up because when "Life Seeker" came up in the YKTTW, I said it was this trope and was told the so you want pages aren't tropes. So it is a little confusing.

@troacctid: I think the point is more that the trope visually shares part of a namespace title, even though it's unrelated. Though whether this causes any problems is up for debate....

A Live Forever article could definitely be made, which could cause problems. Right now there's the one documented case in the Life Seeker YKTTW page. This shows the potential for future confusion, especially since the only difference between Live Forever and So You Want to Live Forever is a slash. That said, there's not really any evidence right now of current widespread confusion so the title isn't a problem now.

Actually, what happened was that I got my So You Want To and How To Guides mixed up, and thought So You Want to Live Forever was the latter - a tongue-in-cheek list of ways to achieve immortality linked to tropes, like How To Become A Love Interest. (I may have been mixing up a vague memory of what the trope actually was with the So You Want To family.) I don't think anyone would mistake this for being a writing guide, if only because I don't think any of the So You Want To pages have this format, referring to something a character does or something otherwise unrelated to writing. (Are there any So You Want To pages where the following verb isn't "write"?)

However... that doesn't change the fact that this isn't the most intuitive title for what it is. I think it's really old and wouldn't pass modern YKTTW muster; in fact I wouldn't be surprised if the So You Want To family was in some way snowcloned from it. There's a reason the YKTTW that started this whole mess was created in the first place.

Bump. I wouldn't mind changing it to Immortality Seeker, though I'm not convinced there are problems with the title right now.

I agree with unhappyyak about Immortality Seeker being a preferable name even though renaming is not per se necessary here. Still, if anyone else think this trope should be renamed, I would be glad to make a crowner to that effect.

I guess my biggest issue with the current name is that it is supposed to be a character trope, but it is written like a plot trope or a So You Want To trope.

So You Want to Live Forever found in: 99 articles, excluding discussions.

This title has brought 161 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.

I don't think a single proposition crowner is needed in the first place. The name is misleading, seeing we have So You Want To as an index for tropes name like this one, but where this trope doesn't fit. That means a rename is needed. If anything I'd put an alternative names crowner, but Inmortality Seeker is the perfect name for this trope, I can't imagine a better name for it.

The name is possibly non-ideal but hardly misleading. And we have tons of pages that begin with a namespace name. Is there any proof that people are actually mistaking the trope for a non-existent So You Want To page?

[up] While maybe people aren't misusing the trope right now the name suggests a So You Want To trope (when it isn't). That is misleading, as someone might put it there without reading what the trope is really about (that happens even when renaming and picking images, there are people who don't read what the trope is about before talking).

Inmortality Seeker explains the trope better and it hasn't got the So You Want To problem, I vote for changing it. If someone really thinks we need a crowner for this then go ahead, but I don't see why wouldn't we change the name for a better one when we can do it easily.

Immortality Seeker is definitely better than the current name, which is also a line-of-dialogue (e.g. something we try to avoid).

So, does anybody oppose to change the name to Inmortality Seeker? If no one says anything in three days I'll change the name.

[up]There's plenty of opposition to changing the name. TRS is built on consensus, not ultimatums.

[up]Bother to check before you open your mouth. That supposed "plenty" opposition (only one message) is from March. As in 8 months ago. Unless you're opposing now there's no one who thinks the name shouldn't be changed. And the people who wrote now DO think it should be changed.

Are you opposing the change? Tell us why. But don't lie when you talk. Also I'm not working on ultimatums. I just told that so people notice the threads. Having open threads since forever and not working to close them make us have over 600 of them, when there's a limit of 500.

[up]I'm sorry, but what do you consider post 11, made just two days ago? There is simply no consensus to rename(only that Immortality Seeker is a good one if it does happen), which calls for a crowner, not going off and doing what you think should be done simply because there's a backlog.

You don't skip crowners unless it's way, way clear that something is wrong with the name. And that's not the case here. I support a rename, but you don't skip the proper procedure that easily.

[up][up] I consider it doesn't oppose. It says "it's not misleading", not "it shouldn't be renamed". In fact it's says "the name is hardly ideal". Learn to read. Also I didn't do anything, there is nothing you can accuse me of. Be careful before accusing someone, and think before you babble things that are utterly wrong.

[up] I'm not skipping crowners yet, so I'm not doing anything against the rules. Had you read what I said you would have seen I had to say that in order to get people to notice the thread. Because it seems people talk in a thread, and then suddenly decide to go to another and forget about the first one, instead of trying to solve the first problem. And that's what made us have over 600 threads, because people don't finish what they start.

And NOW, I'm creating a crowner. Because it seems you prefer trying to bash me before taking things into your own hands and creating it yourselves.

There's not much opposition to changing the name, but on the other hand the only documented instance of someone getting tripped up by it is me mistaking it for something that isn't even the same snowclone pattern. Is there genuine evidence the name is broken?

[up][up] Yeah, that was the only thing I posted. You were completely right when you were concerned. Post 12 where it says "If someone really thinks we need a crowner for this then go ahead" before you wrote your first post here was clearly written by someone else.

[up] It's still a snowclone of the So You Want To family that doesn't fit there, and therefore is unclear. And there's no need to have misuse to change the name for a better one.

As a general guideline, I don't like renaming something with this much use without any missue. However, Immortality Seeker is a great name and should at least be a redirect.
