It's been rigged for the past few years due to Dream Works basically buying the committee. Pixar resigned from the Annies last year as a result.

I'm surprised nobody's complained about Chicago beating The Pianist, The Two Towers, and Gangs of New York in 2002.

Did anyone mention this? If not, then...WARNING! Fanboy Rage

[[Film/Transformers Transformers]] not winning VISUAL EFFECTS award.

Say what you will about The Golden Compass. The Academy lost my respect.

[up]Pirates had better effects, mainly the convincing wet skin in bright light.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has better effects. Transformers had basic robot effects and was nothing special.

How none of the cast members of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, with the exception of Ian Mc Kellen, got any recognition. I don't know if it was because Hollywood's weird ideas about fantasy, which would be weird considering all the recognition Return of the King got, or because they're basically ensamble cast movies.

Specially when Return of the King came out, and everybody was talking anout how Sean Astin should had gotten a noination, I think even Peter Jackson mentioned it in one interview, and then he didn't. If I had to pick one of the actors to get a nomination it was definitely him.

I'm pissed at how Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor beat Star Trek First Contact for Best Makeup in 1996. How could that be more impressive than this?

[up][up][up][up][up][up] The movies came out in different years and if they did come out at the same time, I wouldn't have minded seeing Pirates winning it. It really deserves it.

HOWEVER!! Seriously, dozens of transforming robots beaten to talking bears? Seriously, fuck Academy.

As I said, the robots were nothing special. There were just CGI robots that had been done a million times before. Honestly, 2007 was a weak year for that category and one shouldn't mind about either one.

As for the winner, The Golden Compass was about the same level but the Academy loves morphing effects so that's why it won.

[up] Let's see, one two three...oh, oops. I wasn't talking to you, just the guy above you. Sorry for that. Although since I do not possess any professional knowledge about CGI, but come on, don't you think it's a bit too much to dismiss all that graphics as "basic?"

They mostly look the same to me. Nothing seems organic about CGI nowadays (there are some exceptions though, such as Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Men in Black and more recently, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

The animated CGI movies are usually great though.

New one:

Black Swan not getting nominations for Best Makeup or Best Supporting Actress nominations for Barbara Hershey or Winona Ryder. The Visual Effects were also award-worthy (the transformation scene is very impressive for a film with only a $13 million budget).

Also, the Best Adapted Score category should have been brought back to let Clint Mansell get nominated.

Children Of Men not winning anything and being severely under-nominated; despite being one of the most well-reviewed films of 2006.

Yeah, yeah, I know it went up against The Departed, among others, but I think the film should have went home with SOMETHING. I know Pans Labyrinth's cinematography was great, but I've seen few films shot as captivatingly and amazingly as Children Of Men in the past decade.

^ Children Of Men should've been nominated for Best Picture, at the very least. There shouldn't ever be any argument about that.

Anyway...

1965: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb losing Best Picture to My Fair Lady and Peter Sellers losing Best Actor to Rex Harrison.

1972: Malcom McDowell not even getting a nomination for his performance in A Clockwork Orange.

Those two disappoint me the most.

1. Saving Private Ryan losing to Shakesphere In Love. My guess was that it was for purely political reasons.

2. Dark Knight (2008). Need I say more?

3. Up losing to Hurt Locker.

I don't think it was for political reasons. The Weinsteins just promoted the film heavily to the Academy.

And also, Saving Private Ryan probably split the vote with Life is Beautiful and The Thin Red Line (1998 was a highly unoriginal year as three World War II films and two English historical dramas made up the field while more original and different films such as American History X and The Big Lebowski got snubbed).

Christopher Nolan not getting a Best Director nominee for Inception. That movie was great.

It's not about whether the movie was good, it's about whether the director did his job well.

But, considering that every one of the acceptance speeches made for Inception credited Nolan with the win, I'd say he deserved a nomination.
