It was funny how Sonic Underground had the more accurate take on Classic Knuckles...

@FOFD: I disagree, but fair enough. I respect your opinion on that.

Was that your first animated thing you watched, out of curiousity? I watched a lot of shows before it, so the OVA voices felt highly unnatural to me. It may have to do with nostalgia. Or just how you personally prefer it among each voice you've heard. Nothing wrong with it either way. smile

[up] Considering X didn't come out till after the Adventure games where his personality was changed, I'd say that was logical.

The closest thing to a Treasure hunter the classic games bring mention to is from a statement that only implies it. Saying that he's good at finding secrets.

The OVA is the 1st time its mentioned. Though him being on friendly terms with Sonic is wrong.

I wasn't able to watch the entire thing until after I'd seen Sonic X, SATAM, and Ao STH, in that order.

It's the fight scenes really. That animation was smooth. They haven't animated Sonic that way since. His run, his movement, his Spin Dash, it was perfect. That OVA made Metal Sonic one of my favorite antagonists, since it actually shows him rivaling, if not being superior to Sonic - just as Eggman intended.

The only other time we got to see Metal Sonic kicking that much ass was during that brief epilogue to Sonic CD. There was Generations, but that fight was fanservice.

That scene alone is better than any of the scenes I saw in Lost World, Generations, and Colors.

Yeah, I fail to see how unless there's nostalgia involve. Sonic's voice in the OVA and the dub in general is around So Bad, It's Good quality. The dub is enjoyable because of that actually. (Never bothered to see the sub)

The OVA itself is very fun to watch though. That's like the only animated adaption of Sonic I've seen so far.

I really liked the OVA's take on how Sonic and Tails' partner dynamic worked.

Sonic being too bothered to save the Owl and leaving it to Tails is so deliciously good of him.

The OVA has its moments, but I feel like it's way too meandering in terms of its pacing to really work on the whole. It's a weird little thing that's fun enough to watch, but not necessarily good enough to be the be-all, end-all for Sonic.

Now, Sonic For Hire, on the other hand... tongue

Insert witty 'n clever quip here.

Had the most boner-killing conclusion in the history of boner-killing conclusions.

But was ridiculously funny for the entirety of its seven seasons. Happyhour really lost me after finishing Sonic for Hire, as well as Megaman dies at the end. And who knows if Morty Kombat will ever kome back. Sprite animation is so rare these days.

Um, I don't think anyone would put the Sonic OVA on that sorta level. At least not anybody I know.

I must have replayed City Escape so many times, I can still sing the whole thing. That, Live and Learn, Sonic Heroes theme song. The only song of late I've liked was Endless Possibility, and well, I hated that game.

Probably my favorite Sonic opening and song.

If only the game were that awesome.

I did enjoy it, but it definitely wasn't like the intro.

They need to make something with Sonic animated like this again.

I need to watch the OVA, I never got around to it though. I tried watching the Dub but quit because I couldn't understand it.

I liked what I saw though, just not the voices.

[up]Yeah, I liked him, but he honestly wasn't anything special.

It wasn't really until the sad ending of Unleashed that I really liked him as a character. It almost feels like a cheap way to make fans care about him.

This actually sounds just like Midna. Didn't really care about her until the end. But she DID have a pretty unique personality to make you like her without the ending though.

I wouldn't say just the sad ending. I like how Chip & Sonic develop throughout the game and how they became friends seeing the world together. Chip himself was pretty funny, and definitely help provided the atmosphere the game was going for well. And the scene with Sonic at adabat was also heartwarming.

It also helps that they he wasn't bundle with bad writing choices given what happen in the previous game before it. They went with something that felt natural. That's what made Chip special.

Hmm, you might be right.

I haven't actually played the first half of the game in a long while, and there was a large span of time between my playing of the first third of the game, then the last half.

I really shouldn't be making rash opinions like that.

Honestly? Eh, it's been a while since I beat Unleashed, but it was mostly his voice, more than anything, that annoyed me. I mean, his character wasn't great, since, as I said, he reminded me of the ACTUAL Scrappy-Doo as a character, more than anything.

Maybe I'd like him more if I didn't have "SONIIIIIICCCCC, I THINK DARK GAIA'S GETTING READY TO DO SOMETHIIIIIIIIING" burned into my eardrums.

Yet another irritating addition to the Sonic cast.

Marine the Raccoon, Shade the Echidna, Tikal, Cosmo, the Wisps (good lord, hated those things) bleh. Team Chaotix I liked, because Espio was a ninja, and they added unique mission objectives to the stages in Sonic Heroes.

Irritating in that, "Hey, it's a new game, let's add another character who does almost nothing for the plot or gameplay."

As much as I like Sonic Adventure, what was the point of each and every single character encountering that red light and getting a random flashback that none of them would understand later? Tikal lived in an ancient civilization who tampered with Chaos, forcing Tikal to seal Chaos and herself inside the Master Emerald. The only person this mattered to was Knuckles, and IIRC, he didn't comment on it.

Cream, Big, Blaze, Gamma, and Silver were playable at least, and added something new to the gameplay. Amy as well.

the wisps aren't any different from function than the animals sonic was saving in the sonic games, except they actually give you powerups.

i certainly prefer them over any other of the characters you listed.

Tikal explained why the echidna tribe is no more and explained why Chaos was trapped inside the emerald. It gives reason to why Chaos was the way he was.

Its pretty much backstory and Sonic was pretty much the only one who made any connections between the backstories.

Knuckles actually didn't care about any of the ancient ehidna stuff.

I have a more complicated beef with them, not related to them not changing up gameplay, though, their presence in the plot was basically a damsel role.

One thing I loved about Sonic CD and Sonic 06 was how Sonic's natural abilities were being expanded on, instead of giving him a magic ring, or a magic sword, or a gun, or a some tiny floating dog, or making him a werehog. Look at what Sonic was able to do in CD's opening. I love how 06 finally gave us an opportunity to see Sonic "cut loose", even if it was a bit clunky and most fans hated the high-speed sections.

All of the abilities the Wisps provided were substitutes for things Sonic should be able to do, or has already done - which feels redundant and pointless. I don't like power-ups as gimmicks. Mario has a powerset that's complimented with new power-ups in every new game. Sonic, though, you need to be more creative. Don't just give him a new source of energy for that game that lets him "move at superhog speed". And they were supposed to store an energy "greater" than the Chaos Emeralds, which really rubs me the wrong way. Look at their abilities:

  • White Wisps give you a speed boost - which Sonic is capable of doing.
  • Red Wisps make Sonic combust - which is what the Fire Shield is for. Sonic could theoretically accomplish this anyway using air friction. I'd prefer that as an extension of his own ability rather than "alien creature gives him this power".
  • Orange Wisps turn him into a rocket - as seen in Sonic CD, Sonic can already recoil/launch himself at incredible speed. Plus he has the Homing Attack.
  • Yellow Wisps let Sonic... drill underground. Right. Wow. Inventive.
  • Green Wisps turn him into a hovercraft and let him follow trails of rings. He could already the latter with Lightspeed Dash. Older games came up with ways to overcome his lack of flight by adding features to the environment, like Marble Garden Zone. Granted, this is more of a nitpick, as flight is a power that Sonic sorely lacks.
  • Cyan Wisps turn Sonic into a laser... because he can't already move at speeds that shatter enemy machines, or tunnel through obstacles, or launch himself with tremendous speed.
  • Pink Wisps give him spikes. Sonic already has those, and it's basically a slower Spin Dash.

  • Cube let's Sonic squash things. He can already move at superhuman speed and stomp on the ground.
  • Frenzy, admittedly, is unique.

In addition, their designs are lazy. When creators resort to "cute blob" character designs, I get the impression they're running out of ideas.
