I mean the whole concept of a tomboy is kind of dying nowadays due to lax gender roles. Back in the day, especially in Japan, a girl who liked sports, who didn't back down from a fight, was loud and aggressive or anything stereotypically "masculine" would be considered tomboyish.
In that respect, Amy with her spunky attitude and aggressive pursuit of Sonic could be labeled "tomboyish," even with her otherwise girly traits. This was before her being flanderized as a fangirl too, although they are thankfully reining that in with her recent portrayals.

So on twitter Maekawa revealed new information on Sonic Heroes' development.

He says that they considered having 6 teams (Sonic/Tails/Knuckles, Amy/Cream/Rouge, Chaos/E-102/Big, Espio/Charmy/Vector, Fang/Bean/Bark, Metal Sonic/Ray/Mighty) but cut back on them and that there talk about whether Shadow was dead or not. He also wondered what teams a Heroes 2 would have before speculating that the Babylon Rogues and Blaze/Silver/Sticks would join.
Some of the team choices in idea and positions are range from unsurprising (Rouge being a Power character) to odd (Chaos being a Speed character).

What's odd to me is the assortments. Those are some terrible choices. I would have gone:
- Sonic/Tails/& Knuckles
- Amy/Cream/Big
- Metal Sonic/E-102/Chaos
- Mighty/Rogue/Bark
This is clearly the best order!

Its funny because that move has helped create a further delineation between the classic and modern eras when it comes to characters.
Thanks to stuff like that and Sonic Mania it feels as if there's a bit of a dividing line between the old (Hooligans, Ray, Mighty) and the new (Shadow, Rouge, Cream, Big, Omega, Silver)
Ironic considering it was Heroes reintroducing both the Chaotix and Metal Sonic after their absence for seven years that put them into the category of fitting in both eras like Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik and Amy do.

I meant more in terms of Metal Sonic being in a prominent story role beyond cameos or playable in multiplayer sections.
The last game related thing for any of the Chaotix prior to Heroes of course was Espio in Sonic the Fighters circa 96.

Chaos as a Speed character baffles me. Remember how slow he was in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle? And lets not forget Sonic Battle.

I feel the same about suggesting Mighty as a Speed type. Maybe he was just Sonic with a walljump in Chaotix, but canonically he's a bruiser on par with Knuckles. (At the very least.) And judging by Mania's trailer and his new ability, SEGA gets that.
Maybe it could use Chaos 4, the fish form? That was speedy.

According to the post, Mighty would have been Power, with Metal Sonic as Speed. I imagine Chaos would have shape-shifted into some type of speedy form.
I wonder if Mighty and Ray would have been villains if this had come to fruition? Maybe they were tricked/brainwashed? Was E102 supposed to be Gamma or Omega?? So many questions!

E102 is Gamma, which fits with that being Team Adventure.
I think metal would've faced-heel turned or something.
