By the way, how long has Iizuka been involved with Sonic?

I only ask because it's not present in the games at all. The last Word of God I remember on the subject was maybe around the time Colors came out, with them confirming that the world of the series is and always has been Earth.

Not really. We're talking about something Iizuka apparently said in an interview once upon a time.

I personally don't pay much attention to that kind of stuff since it doesn't seem like Sonic Team has any intention in exploring that aspect of things. (Though I'm rather willing to see where Ian Flynn goes with it come the Sonic IDW comic.)

Hell yeah. I have the cart for Sonic & Tails 2 so this is awesome news.

Major Bits from SXSW:

Sonic Mania is being released physically as Sonic Mania Plus, with an art book, holographic package, and a usable Geneses/Megadrive slip cover. Plus will have 4 player competition mode, an encore mode which changes elements of the levels for the playthrough, and two new playable characters... Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo (Yes, seriously). Those who bought the game digitially will be able to download it an an update the same time the physical edition releases which is set for Summer 2018.

-The animation team from Mania will be releasing five animted shorts based on the former's opening cartoon style on You Tube over the next few months with the first getting released in a few days. Sneak Peak at the first episode

-Small tease for a new Sonic Game which is not a sequel to any past game apparently.

Don't know how I feel about it being a separate physical release, but hey Ray and Mighty!!!

I'm liking this.

Quick Note: Mighty is one of my favorite Sonic characters of all time. I'm dead serious. Granted, most of that is due to his appearances in the Archie comics where he was basically Armadillo!Terry Bogard, but still. So the fact that he's finally returning in the games after so fucking long puts a big ol' smile on my face.

And Ray's okay too.

I am curious to see what the gameplay differences will be for Mighty and Ray. Nothing about Whitehead and company's efforts would suggest they'll be a lazy reskin, so clearly they'll have some aspect to their jump/attack that differentiates them from the classic trio. Mighty's wall jump could come back from Knuckles Chaotix, but who knows.

More than Sonic playable, the return of Super Tails and Super Knuckles, dead forgotten characters revived in a boss battle and two more of them made playable...

This really is just an officially licensed fangame, and it's glorious.

Not just more than Sonic playable; the characters are extensions of the basic formulas.

I know exactly how you feel but with Ray instead. I got soft spots for Sonic characters of Seldom-Seen Species.

Yup, he did. Not that it matters since Mania doesn't have voice acting, but still.

I wonder if the success of Mania has Sega thinking its ideal to turn it into a brand itself, with the physical re-release and animated shorts further testing the waters of it being a full blown sub series.

With no Boom games on the horizon and no news on a third season of the show, it could gradually move to take its place in some respect.

Absolutely. It seems the obvious route to take but I was so afraid that they wouldn't capitalize on it because, well, Sega is Sega. But money talks and Sega appears to be listening for once.

I guess fans of Modern Sonic might have a little reason to be concerned, but I doubt they'll abandon that. The brand is still too strong. I have a feeling the racing game will be a success and I'm not as cynical on the movie as some.

A break from Modern Sonic is probably for the best right now; it's just way too flawed and Forces didn't do it any favors. Focusing on what's actually popular right now is the way to go.

While I'm sure there are people who dislike the Classic Sonic pandering (analogous to the genwunner hate from Pokemon), I do agree they need to take a break with Modern Sonic and regroup. And be a bit more serious about this.

Reception to Mania and Forces should give them a better idea.

Yeah I really couldn't care less about Mania or Classic Sonic.

That racing game seems promising though, especially if it's a successor to Transformed.
